Hey guys, I just passed my TP this week thursday and I've been looking at this forum for quite some time now, in anticipation of buying a new bike.

I'm planing on getting a KIPS and I saw on quite a few "check list for buying a second bike" threads that I should check how hard it is to a) kick start the bike and b) find neutral gear.

I was wondering that assuming I find a KIPS out there which is hard to kick start and hard to find neutral.

What does it mean about the condition of the bike? Is it still worth getting?

(Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the bike has been sitting there doing nothing for a while, the bike would naturually be hard to kick start if it hasn't been started for a while right?)

Up to you la..If you still wanna get the bike (love at first sight) Ahaha..Then be ready to fork out some $$ to get it serviced..An advice is to go with a friend or find someone from the KR thread to go with you to check on the bikes before buyin..Coz shop they see/know you new and some more alone they will not think twice about choppin you..Ahaha..At least with someone experience they can advice you on whether its worth buyin or not..Take your time..Don't rush..There are a couple of bikes (KR) for sale in the Garage Sales..Might wanna try checkin that out..:goodluck:

Thanks for the advice, man ;)

But I was really wondering about finding neutral. I understand that with some bikes, finding neutral gear is very hard, such as those CB125s we use in riding schools.

Does the effort it takes to find neutral reflect the bikes condition?

neutrals are hard to get once the mileage of the engine oil is up...

oil engine oil gives bad gear shift... e.g. skipping neutral all the time....

so its not a good way to determine if the engine is in good condition....

Ahaha..Those bikes in riding skools..Think they seldom change EO as you would on your own bike..Hence the difficulty in finding neutral..Not a good way to judge the condition of the bikes but it could indicate time to change EO or get the bike serviced..

Sometimes after changin EO also hard to find neutral..Coz biting point is too near..That one you can just adjust the clutch..

I changed bike few times liao and I always noticed that there are 2 types of bikes when it comes to finding neutral.

1st: Bike that are easier to go to neutral from 1st gear.

2nd: Bike that are easier to go to neutral from 2nd gear.

So, have to really get to know your bike la..

Having owned a kickstart and an electric-start based bikes, I'd like to share my comments on both:

Electric-start is convenient, no doubt. A small problem about that is that relies on battery power and if the battery were to be low on electric charge, you would have a somewhat immobilised bike that is too weak to crank the engine to start it. That's when people have to push-start the bike - this physically drains you out.

For kick-start bikes with the abovementioned condition, there is some hope of getting the bike to start and to begin supplying some power to the battery -- enough for a trip to the bikeshop to have the battery replaced.

Both are with their advantages and disadvantages.

For bikes that are left alone for an extended period of time, it's either that the engine's dry, or left-over residue that's causing the bike to not start at the first attempt.
