Different. Different. Cannot compare the sporty with sports bike or cruiser or any other bike. It's a class by it's own. I think the closes comparison is a naked bike or cafe racer. Let's not forget that it came out when there weren't bikes like R1 and Busa to compare with either. Anyway it's just a name. If the sportster came out much later, it'd probably be called something else. Hmm...it'd be fun to guess what they'll call it. Truimphs call their naked bike Bonneville. Maybe it'll be called Glide Jr or something. Heee

Hmm the naked bikes I thought are the Speed Triple and Street Triple? Bonneville is more like a classic road bike right?

Sportys are so cute and at the same time so cool. Minimalistic look. Nothing extra :)

Actually Harley wanted this bike to be sporty in the first place.. If someone buy a XR1200 just to cruise on long straights den it'll be a pity..

i'll agree on that...

Feb 08 - April09= CB 400 Version S

May 09 - Oct 10 = Harley XR1200

Oct 10 - Oct 12= KTM SMT 990

Oct 12 - Oct 13 = Tmax 500

Mar 13 - Jul 13= SYM maxsym 400

Another XR 1200 on the road as of yesterday. see you guys around.

I am loving it.

Congratulatuons Steven :thumb: Hey you should consider installing a coin machine to your bike and ppl can slot in say twenty fifty-cents coins for an hour unlimited ride. It'll help finance the bike...heck i'm sure you'll recoup the cost you laid out for the bike...:D

Evening Guys and Gals.

I just dropped the rear of a 2000 Dyna by an inch and I'm looking at getting mid-glides to complete the look. I've got a bunch of questions that I need clarified though.

Should I bother getting triple trees that are raked? Do I need to extend the forks? How about unraked trees but using fork cups for rake? Asking this coz I was reading that if you drop the bike you gotta do something to the front end to maintain trail...don't really understand this bit though.

Any recommended brands of triple trees? Should I get internal fork stops or external fork stops? Any other matters that I need to be aware off when dealing with the front end? A bit worried coz thats the most impt part of the bike.

Thanks for helping me out!!

U can just get a front lowering kit. That will maintain the original bike geometry and handling. If I'm not wrong the kit comes w progressive springs and a set of pistons. So u wun bottom out even tho it's lowered. Raked trees will not actually increase the rake, but the offset will increase. Handling of the bike will change too.

this might be misleading to others la.. rake trees do not increase the NECK RAKE ANGLE.... but it does increase/alter the rake angle of the forks... forks do get pushed forwards more when compared to normal trees.

with regards to raking your neck angle and maintaining the proper trail, using raked trees willl help maintain your geometry only if u did the proper calculations to determine whats your stock rake and try to achieve it from your fork mods.... if u were to use a conventional increassed rake, it would mean you're bringing the fork out further.. this would actually cause to to move even further away from your stock angles.

if you jus dropped the rear by an inch, i dont think u need to worry about the front. it should still be within the acceptable trail. if it really really bothers u.. lower the front too then.. alot cheaper that way.

internal or external fork stops are more to asthethics... some like their triple trees to be smooth clean.. other dun mind seeing the 2 nipples popping out as the fork stops..

That'r wat I'm trying to say. If the fork are more angled wouldn't the offset increase? Like ur El'toro, fork angle is the same as stock right? But offset is massively more. I haven't riddin or seen ur bike in person, but I would imagine the steering to be bloody heavy. That's how offset of the fork can change the handling of the bike. To change the actually steering rake of the bike,u gotta either chop/change the frame. Raked trees which makes ur fork look for slanted only increases the offset. So far I haven't come across after market raked trees that will give u the exact same offset as stock

I had enquired about the front lowering kit before about a month back at the dealership. Costs about $450. On top of that, need to change the side stand cos mine is too long.... $250. In total you will need to spend about $700 without labour charges.... guess a better alternative is to get the lowering springs and screws off e-bay. I, too am on a Dyna so the price should be around there. Regards.

nope bro the terms are not the same. offset is the distance from the steering axle to the fork. means how far your forks are from the neck. the raked trees atually change the angle of the fork but maintain the angle of the neck. so u are actually raking the fork instead of the neck.

springers are not really the same as raked trees. due to the use of rockers at the bottom, the offset in this case is at the wheel. as yes in this context, using the term "offset" is correct. assuming everythign else is at stock dimensions, the wheels get pushed out more.. thus increaing the offset.

raked trees are not jus used to bring a pair of forks to stretched out only. the trees are able to also bring back the trail to the stock dimensions if u get the correct calculations which also involves the fork lengths... this is where blank181 is trying to modify.

as for handling.. if u are talking about stretched out forks, yes they are very wobbly at turning. but its straight line will be very stable. chopping the frame to mod the neck is the proper way of doing a neck rake... but it involves much higher cost and much more expeertise to do such a mod and is irreversible... which is why alot of ppl choose to modify the trees instead.

Bingo.

Lowering the rear an inch or two is a very minor mod as far as changing the geometry of the bike. Leave it as it is, it won't affect your ride much, and don't let others scare you into making more serious mods to compensate.

Changing your front end is a serious mod where it comes to bike geometry. Do it only if you know what you are doing.

... which is why alot of ppl choose to modify the trees instead.

And that's exactly the wrong way to push your front wheel forward. Guilty as charged

haha yeah... and together with the so called fork extensions... wrong or rather less structurally sound way to move the forks forward...

actually i dun really understand why u keep saying i dont get what you are saying.

what i;m telling u is the term u are using is not correct and there are some minor errors in your understanding of the rake and trail of a bike which is why i corrected u...

from what info i have gathered form my research, angled forks are called raked forks... forks which are distanced further away from the neck is termed having an offset difference ... jus like how usually custom triple trees would have descriptions like something like "a raked triple tree with a 5 degree rake angle and 2inch offset" 5 degree refers to how much more degrees it will add to your neck angle and the 2 inch offset refers to how far your forks will protrude from the neck when viewed from the top of the clamp. so your understandig of "Raked trees will not actually increase the rake, but the offset will increase" is incorrect or incomplete

most raked trees alter only the fork rake angle and leave the fork offset stock.. of cos there are variations such that both the offset and rake angle gets altered. raking a tree also has 2 variations where one construction is to rake the stem area or milling the holes of the fork clamps at an angle so that the forks get clamped slightly slanted forward.

its ok. i'll wait for your pics.. btw.. if u are comparing springer forks with telescopic forks then thats the wrong way to go also... el toro was using a springer fork and the massive offset u were talking about came from the rockers i was using... there was no rake involved in the construction of that springer simply bcos i used back the original triple trees.

if u did your research...then you will know that though slightly different, its a different set of calculations and mechanics we are talking about between a springer fork and a conventional telescopic fork

I have a Dyna and lowered the front and rear by 1". I went with the Progressive 412 on the rear and progressive lowered front springs on the front. The front is basically a spring and PCV pipe which you cut to length. I could have lived with just doing the back. The cost wasnt too bad, I ordered from Eastern Performance (or can find it on EBAY) and think it was less than S$300 shipped. You do not need to replace the stand, it just sits a little more upright so have to be careful when parking on a hill. Or you can have a shop heat it up and rebend it for a lot less.

It looks good, but you suffer in suspension as losing 1 inch of travel, so its a much rougher ride. When I go up the NS highway, the stretch between Pagoh and Malacca can bounce me off my seat if not awares :(
