That day I went to top up at shell, but as i press the handle no fuel came out, so I asked the attandant why' he said must get off the bike then only will they allow you to top up, I then ask is it a new Singapore Law he said no its just something which only shell has, after that I just rode off to Esso and top up their.

1: Shell thinks that they are the only petrol station in Spore, so proud that they come up with a regulation which is NOT A SPORE LAW but all bikers must follow if we want to buy their petrol.

2: I find it more dangerous to standup and topup then to sit down, because I am nearer the oil tank and more steady, if we were to standup the bike will be on the side stand and therefore the tank will be tilted and we cannot pump full. thereby risking rust on the inside of the tank.

3: obvously came up from someone who is very well educated and high placed in shell but does not ride a bike.

4: I personaly have never heard of any bike catching fire when topping up. they said that incase the fuel touchs the hot engine and catch fire. Even if fuel touchs a

hot engine, no matter how hot it will not catch fire u still need a naked flame or spark plug to do that or if the engine block is red hot until glowing by which time the seat will have melted already.

From now on i will boycott shell I still have Esso, SPC, Mobil and JB to go to top up, some more they are cheaper.

Shell can implement what ever feck law they want. Same goes for all local petrol retailers.

I put at most a couple of dollars into my tank occasionally.... just to ensure that I can reach JB to finish the job. I can live with standing beside for a just couple of squirts.

:slapforehead: Haiz... Shell advise you to stand up then you stand up lor. How much more fuel can u pump in when you make it upright? :sian: The most obvious reason to stand up is to be able to run away faster if really something happens.

It is true that the chances catching fire are low. This is just a safety precaution. I believe this will soon be the trend in all pertrol kiosk.

ask the attendant to stop attending to cars and walk their lazy butt to your bike. then u hold your bike uprite while you pump.

When tis law came into effect , i get off the bike n pump petrol until the rim then push the bike up n let the petrol flow furthur into the tank n pump again , take up more time , n hold up more cars behind , so now the station sometimes let me pump when i sit on my bike . :cheeky:

It's a precaution procedure recommended by CD, if I remember correctly, but it's not a law to do it. If they implement it, then you just got to follow, no point arguing with the employees cause they only getting paycheck, not implement this kuku ruling. You only put them in diff. position cause it's the management that tell them must do like this and that...

Go to other petrol koisk to pump if you dont like the way they do things, soon, they'll know why no bikers go to their koisk.

That's called 'straddling', and they are "smart" enough to have included it in their sign of "Don'ts" - No sitting or straddling the bike.

I also came up with my own "Don't". Don't pump at Shell!

do you guys think that it has to do with static charges or something? because i think that i have read some where that we are 'not supposed' to touch metallic parts of a car while pumping petrol also because there might be a static charge or something.

anyway, maybe i'm a very ignorant biker and do not know the advantages of pumping petrol while on my bike... because i have always pumped petrol standing up.

I think its for safety..

Whether it is safe or not is subjective and depends on individuals...... just like some inisist that wearing full-face helmets is safer than open-face, and wearing covered shoes is safer than wearing slippers.

But it should be up to the individual to decide what level of safety we choose for ourselves, (ultimately we will bear any consequences ourselves right?) and it should NOT be decided by a corporation which, by the way, is supposed to treat us as paying customers. It's not a free service they are providing, we are paying for their product (petrol).

If they are so concerned about our safety then they should not serve bikes at all.... ask us all to take public transport instead. For our own safety what. Or all ride bicycle lah, no need to pump petrol.

haha i also kena this kinda situation before...felt abit pissed when they told me cannot sit and pump...from my point of view...i feel that we can't say shell is wrong in any sense as their aim is safety for us...however they didnt realise the inconvenience it caused us...so what we can do now is either make do with it go to other petrol station station to pump...i'm juz glad that shell isnt the only petrol provider in Singapore :cheeky:

What if we all write to the petrol stations and ask that if the rider have to get off the bike in case of fire, why don't the passengers of the car get off too when pump petrol. If car catch fire, explosion big big!!!! Muahahahah!!!!

Hmmm.. On v-day i was treated the same way at the SHELL in Tiong Bahru. I was sitting on the bike to pump and the fuel refuse to come out. Then the attandant came along and say "Boy, Have to get off your bike, The machine have sensor thats why you can't refill...." ITS PURE BS MAN!!!! Then I ask him to show me WHERE is the SENSOR (That he claim they have) to me... He suddenly change topic and say now they have this STUPID thing going on... Blah Blah...

I just place back the NOZZLE and left....

If they wanna promote such things then they have to do it fair and square... Ask the people in the car to alight when refilling....

THIS IS BS!!!!

guys - guys ... dont get worked up ... i last heard its actually about the gender ...

I rode to one Shell station along upper thomson rd ... and was reminded to stand and fill up ... not wanting to cause a commotion i heed to the pump attendant advice ...

a couple of minutes later ... my wife rode in and she happily rode in to the same station and happily pump sitting down ... the pump attendant went over to her but did not insist on her to stand up ... i actually didnt hear their conversation ...

so I asked her how come she need not stand up ...

she says she told the pump attendent that guys need to stand up and pump to prevent spraying outside the small hole in the tank .... whereas girls ... they need to sit down to prevent spraying outside the tank ...

so you see ... somethings guys dont get it ...
