For me i have a habit to warm up my bike for about 3~5min before move off, its just kind of everyday thing even for my previous bike. As for S4 if you notice and listen to the exhaust before and after 2~3min there will be a sudden change of sound, seem more smoother.

Actually i feel the most difference you can feel with or without some warming -up time is that you will feel that the bike seems "no power" in the first few minutes of your riding. It will feel a bit draggy especially during the moment when you are moving off at the start.I've a habit of warming up the bike for at least 2half mins too.:cheeky:

i'll normally warm up then wipe the bike n wear helmet. then slowly ride off the carpark. then slowly pickup speed. like that will b good 4 the engine. it will b full warm up n lubrication is more or less appropriate...

to me, with and wtihout warm up the bike, you can tell the difference when you ride off.

ya, that's exactly what I felt too..

I think the same theory applies on why we always need to warm-up our body before we start an exercise..

i usually dun warm up my bike...

personally, after 1.5yrs of riding and 30k mileage... i dun really feel and difference with the engine and my bike is becoming more smooth by the day... pick up is great and power is at its all time best...

i guess the significance of warming up may not be there for modern bikes...

really hate to sell my faithful ride at this time...

I normally warm up for 3 minutes until the temp is 50degC on my meter & rpm becoming more stable.

In the interests of longevity you need to ride ASAP after start, and not thrash the bike unless the engine is warm.

Letting the bike idle (after start) is just letting it run rich permitting the excess petrol to wash away the oil from the cylinders...........more wear.

Riding off will load the engine permitting it to warm up quicker...

I have to warm up... because the weather here is like 10 degrees now, and if I don't open the choke for at least 15 sec... the engine will die.

you guys lucky you live in warm weather all the time.

actually, locally dun need to really warm up unless cold weather or rainy days. warming up here is actually let the oil circulate the engine parts. for me now, didn't warm up much. start, clutch in abt 10 sec, then move out slowly. no need to drag wan. let the rpm go ard 2k rpm or near 3k can liao. its as same as warming up.

Warming up is needed for every engine(be it car, bike, 2stroke, 4stroke) when its cold. Coz when cold things contract rite? so things like ur pistons will be a lil smaller in volume wen cold than wen its hot..

There will be clearances between the piston and the cylinder. Running the engine with load wen its cold will cause the pistons to not move smoothly. Thus will result in uneven wear of the piston rings and the cylinder as the pistons will be "rattling" in the cylinder. By warming up, it will let the piston to expand to its "proper operating size" thus producing smoother piston action thus giving the bike a smooth ride. Also, there will not be any chances of compression leak if the bike is properly warmed up.

Also warming up will give the engine a chance to properly lubricate its innards before any load is applied to the engine. Thus lesser wear and tear.

Still i could be wrong..I learned this during my time in OETI. For those who were technicians in NS will noe wher it is...:bounce:

mayb that applies to diesel engines?? cos diesel engines need a large amt of heat to operate better. petrol engines is slightly different from diesel ones.

pistion rings shd b spring loaded therefore the contraction n expansion theroy can b right or wrong cos the piston ring is to help in compensation of the movement of piston.

wat i learnt is starting of the bike will then cause wear n tear. cos oil is settled below at that time but when started, oil is circulating so wear n tear is minimuium.

n of cos, only fools whack their bikes when the bike is not fully warm up. when u start, ride off the carpark slowly, oso consider warm up. as long as u dun let ur rpm go high then shd b no prob...

but ur theory is more or less right too... warming up is to get every parts of the bike to the right operating temp which is impt.
