@guangwei & zalk,

I think both of you got a valid point from the economic view as well as the policy mechanism standpoint, however zalk had illuminate the point on the "kanchiong spider" syndrome where by socioeconomic factor had ballooned the cost of COE that was not anticipated during the policy formulation - the fear factor.

Some of the hypotheses are:

1) kanchong spider factor

2) trend of Super bikes, the cost of the bikes making the COE insignificant

3) the liberalization of financial loan system, people have more assess to loan

4) collector retain classic model and at the same time own a newer model

5) bikers are unwilling to go public, look at our world class MRT system, rather renew COE with an old ride

6) the popular causation, influx of FTs, hey not all bangala & Ah Tiong are on bicycles

7) massive shift of car owners to biking community, cannot tahan burning cash

8) the monthly ride from MRT/Bus cost about $100+, make no sense for bike (private vehicle) to be cheaper

than that! (Now a new Honda Wave cost $9k OTR, each year $900, each month $100+, with rd tax & insurance

which is still cheaper than MRT).

9) the popular models from 2003/2004 Honda CBR 600/1000 and many others made & models will result in higher

retention/renewal of COE in coming years.

10) All private owners are "renting" from the government, no matter what vehicle we are on, 100cc or 1000cc we are

just renting as a tenant. The landlord won't mind if tenants are willing to pay more! If you can't afford, step aside bcos

others will.

Conclusion, private vehicle cannot be cheaper than public, else you will see the driving ctr flooded with new enrollment.

Therefore, the COE price will ceiling further. They are not pushing people towards public transport as they already have

overcrowding issues, just that they adjust the quota for the costing to make sense. Unlike what the original COE policy

was intended for- to serve the poor and needy like us, now the policy is obsolete - making us (owner of the property) to

pay for our own drinks in our own house.

Recommendation, as a pink IC holder, we are entitle to baby bonus, healthcare benefits, subsidies social & public services,

discounted education, free gym during national services, subsidies "low-cost flat" but why not the freaking COE for born and

breed Singaporean? Whatever the COE price is, WE should be entitle to 50% discount (at least for bike which doesn't contribute

to congestion). Four bikes swee swee parked side by side only consume a car-space. Policy maker, if you are reading this, do

understand that people ride not bcoz they want to, it is bcoz they doesn't have a choice. The unreasonable COE increment will

put the livelihood of some bikers at the risk of losing their jobs due to the lost of their vehicular ownership - what happen next,

national suicide rate will climb and crime rate will rocket. For you policy makers, I sincerely hope that when the side effects of this

policy hit you, it hit you so hard so that these messages can penetrate your scholastic skulls.

Nicely written.

Interesting read, you guys should run for opposition party. :-)

But try not to get carried away as its not that complicated how coe works.

Its business as usual, the government tried to control and the big boys played their game well.

I like this one best, let's make it more impact! instruct the shop to cap at $200 instead? all here agreable pls hands up.. :-)

if all biker can instruct or cap the shop at 2000 coe, that will be a different scenario..

Yes that's the way. Finally people understand. Don't even need all bikers to do that. If I use March as an example, 360 COEs available. 449 bids received. They will follow the price of the lowest unique bid. So if you guys want to do this, do like $1999, $1998, $1997... In this case only 355 successful bids since the last 5 were not unique, ie more than 5 ppl bid the same lowest amount so COEs not enough, and roll over to next bid. So only actually if the bottom 100+ bidders bid like $1999 downwards, the price follows the lowest unique bid that can fit in the number of COEs, so COE price will be $1999 or less.

Ditch the motorcycle and get an electric motorized bicycle. Best of both worlds. No need pay parking and COE. Not even roadtax. Insurance also not compulsory so no need to worry about NCDs or premiums. On the road can ride like motorbike and on pavement like normal bicycle. Traffic rules does not seem to apply. No demerit points. Well that is what I have been noticing for those riding electric motorized bicycle. Can pillion and pick up girls. It is also a fraction the cost of a motorcycle. No need to pump petrol and can 'zhng' with LEDs with no worries.
they are more prone to immediate danger.

on further thought, is there a motorcycle dealer association where all get together? it might be even easier to talk to the businessmen first all one shot - this might speed up feedback and hopefully action.

Probably the govt would have gotten to the dealers 1st. Give them some rebates and other incentives for lack of sales (in case too many people cannot afford to take loan)

The rebates will be a lot leh or even free COE leh. If a lot of bikes to scrap by end of the year the dealers are going to lose a lot of $ either in terms of the new coe price or the price of the machines they bought 2nd hand.

seeing how car coe has been at the same level for almost 4 years (70k around there) , i suspect as long as many bikes with coe ending in 2014 or early 2015 having renewd coe, thus new coe price for bike will still linger at $4k. i then think because of GE in 2016, THEY will suddenly say more bike ceo available.

Posted

4k is still very ex. To me, I'll expect it to linger around the acceptable 1k range, definitely can maintain less than 2k (considering it's been in this range for the past 2 years but suddenly spike this year).

Doubt GE will help, considering no one in parliament is voicing out for us.

Posted

expect it to peak at around 7k at 4th quarter and stay there. but i saw some ppl saying PAP = COE. i think its a comment posted without thinking. imagine, bikes like bicycle like in china in 10years time. by that time jam until dont know like what. something has to be done. you cant stop people from buying bikes, then make it slower or harder for them to buy lorh.

This bidding thing is actually damn stupid if you think about it. The excuse is it limits the number of vehicles on the road, but the quota means the number of vehicles on the road that is added each month is limited already by the presence of the quota itself instead of the bidding. Lets say 343 for this month. So it actually doesn't matter whether you bid $1 or $4500, the same 343 or fewer vehicles is gonna be added to the road. The only difference is the money the government gets. All it does is price the poorer people out of the system. A needs-based system needs to be implemented instead.
