Hi, i just bought my X1-R. Newbie to X1-R. Planning to change to tubeless tyres. Think the stock ones are slippery. Intend to buy Bridgestone tyres cos they say very good. Maybe you guys can recommend what tyres suits X1-R best? Thank you.

(if this is not the right forum: moderators - please fix ;))

Hi everyone, I'm new here, nice to meet you.

I am considering replacing the stock wheels (rims and maybe tires too) on a Wave 125i bike. Considering the effect this has on the way a bike behaves on the road I seriously think this is a big deal.

I have researched this a lot and came up with a list of pros and cons I would like to share with you. I am not certain whether my list is correct or not – I will be happy to hear what experienced bikers/modders in this forum have to say about it, and perhaps you could help me consider all the factors and make a decision! :)

Basically I can go in 3 different ways:

  1. Keep the stock spoke rims.
  2. Upgrade to mag wheels.
  3. Upgrade to aftermarket spoke rims.

The mag wheels I am dying to get are the Racing Boy Sport 188: http://tinyurl.com/sport188 They look so good!

Pros and cons for mag wheels:

Pros:

  • Mag wheels allow me to use tubeless tires which are safer in case of a flat tire/tire blowout.

  • Mag wheels are heavier thus providing the bike with better handling and better acceleration

  • Mag wheels don't require any maintenance

  • Are easy to clean (doesn't apply to my model of choice though
    :p
    )

  • And just plain look goddamn good

Cons:

  • Mag wheels are heavier and demand extra engine power to push them, increasing fuel consumption and reducing top speed

  • Because they demand extra engine power they reduce torque, making the bike weaker when having to go uphill for example.

  • Because mag wheels are robust/tough (in comparison to spoke wheels which are more flexible) they transfer vibrations straight onto the shock absorbers/dampers and the frame causing a less pleasant ride and more wear on the dampers

  • The rear rim doesn't support a disc-brake conversion kit – it is designed and built for the default drum-brake type. I can use two front rims, but then I lose all the bike calibration. Because the front wheel is smaller than the rear wheel, and I don’t think this replacement is recommended then.

The pros and cons of aftermarket/stock spoke rims are:

Pros:

  • Spoke wheels are lighter, which results in a higher top speed.

  • Spoke wheels are lighter which helps the engine to deliver more torque.

  • Spoke wheels absorb some of the forces and vibrations coming from the road, which takes off some strain from the dampers and results in a little softer ride.

  • It's easy to find spoke rims that support a rear disc-brake mod, all you have to do is replace the hub with a the mod one.

Cons:

  • Lacing the wheel (installing the spokes & hub into the rim) is NOT easy, and can be DANGEROUS if not done right.

  • To add to that spoke wheels require a degree maintenance and somewhat regular checking of the spokes and hub for alignment and true.

  • Lighter wheels result in lessened acceleration and worse handling than mag wheels – a condition which might be dangerous when having to avoid obstacles/vehicles on the road.

  • Spoke wheels require a tubed tire meaning in a case of poking a hole in the tube the tire goes flat RIGHT NOW and the road takes your motorbike on a very scary dance.

  • Spokes may get out of "true", dent, or straight out break, however rarely.

I don't know the weight of the stock Honda Wave rims. The wheels I am interested in weigh 2.75kg (front) and 3.46kg (rear). Do you think this is a big weight difference? Do you think changing to these wheels will have a big effect on the bike's behavior?

More than anything, out of your experience, is my list of pros and cons accurate? Complete?

I appreciate any input and I hope that by helping me your information will also server to help others in the future. Thanks in advance for your time and input, pilau

The weight differences doesn't really affect the power much. The differences are lesser than when u put a lot of unnecessary stuffs in the top box and u box. But i think using tubeless tire are much safer.
