If yes u can apply a Postgraduate Diploma. It is only a yr programme..unless u want to specialise in PE? Im not so sure about the programme criteria..Application closing date is on feb so i guess u have to wait next yr? haha..the programmes commence in July each yr..i suggest u check out moe.edu.sg/teach for further info

Wow this thread is pretty heated up. I think some people here need to be aware that there are English Language majors and English Literature majors. I'm an English Language major and I'm not afraid to say that what I learn in university cannot be applied to Primary - JC level. What we learn is the derivation of the language and the analysis behind it. We do not correct people, but we observe and take down data. Social-scientists you could say. After all, when enough people say the wrong thing, it becomes the right thing. Singapore's so-called standard English has deviations with regards to syntax. There are many types of world Englishes.

English teachers are more prescriptive. In comparison with doctors, what they do is prescribe the grammar to the school kids. Ever asked your teacher why the determiner the is always in front of the noun and why it can be preceded by adjectives? Such concepts are too abstract for kids to handle, so teachers have to use lay man terms or simply shrug it aside and tell the kid to accept the fact. I'm still wondering why generative linguistics has logician tables and mathematical functions. Perhaps humans have tried too much to analysis cognitive patterns.

Anyway, in my opinion I feel that kids should develop a strong command of spoken English rather than written English, at an early age. Having a foundation in spoken English gives the kid a headstart in school. Many parents neglect phonetics, which is sad. I believe that proper phonetics and phonology is not taught in school? At least I wasn't taught that in school. I too worry for my kids in future, if my kid's English teacher majored in Economics or business. Would they know the finer points of language? I honestly hope they prove me wrong.

*p.s. In case anyone attacks my "English", I'm is a cliticization of I am*

heh  peace

yes phonetics very important, i grew up in the seventies learning phonetics from shows like "the electric company" ....phonetics was fairly well emphasized in that era.

Let's say, I'm taking my Mass Communication diploma now and in the final year and I aspire to be a teacher. What's the next step for me to becoming one?
