This past few days, I've been experiencing cars and bikes with HID bulb installed flashing high tone of light during the night and these road users may not realize that these high intensity discharge bulbs actually generates excess amount of brightness directly into mirrors and thus diverts right onto the eyes of the opposite road user(rider/driver) which causes extreme glares and therefore distracting his/her vision.

Is Singapore that dark during the night that u actually need all these high powered instruments?

If it was the north/south highway in Malaysia, then I'm sure there is some use of it but then you can't turn it on all the time as it distracts the vison of the oncoming vehicles from the other side of the road.

But i guess these road users may not understand the fact that HID lights are not meant for Singapore roads.

And, how could it even be legal to use it ?

What do you guys/girls think ?

it's pointless when discussing this issues..

even our fellow bikers here mod their bikes to that extend or put such HID lights...

we may not be aware that even our close buddies might like the idea to put one too. so how do we put the idea in a negative way?

personally, wat i did to prevent myself is to tilt my side mirrors a bit lower. facing a little slightly down.

so everytime i need to check back, i tilt my body and head down to view the mirror. may not be safe thought but it helps.

i'm riding a sportsbike btw and bending lower is not uncommon.

it might not be a great idea bt it helps. especially when not looking at the mirrors so much. the glare won't deter ur eyesight..

More and more cars nowadays are coming stock with HID lights.

HIDs themselves are not the problem, it's headlights that are not aligned properly. Even regular headlights if aligned too high will blind you.

I guess that could be one of the problem. adjusting headlights to high. but then, why would there be in need of HID lights ? it's a soar to the eyes. Why won't they be friendly.

yesterday night, as i was heading home from our normal meetup session, there was a biker with HID lights flashing terribly as both of us were riding on the KJE, i was so disappointed that i slowed down and went over at the back of him and turn my high lights on. Guess what happen after that, He blasted the bike at an enormous speed and disappeard. So it shows clearly that he knows the reason i did that. But why?

HIDs installed without changing the reflectors will cause very irritating glare to oncoming traffic. It's so bright that it's a hazard. Try being tailgated by a SUV with aftermarket HIDs. Even when I am driving, it's super annoying, makes me want to smash his headlights lor.

RE: Penalty for installing aftermarket HID

FEEDBACK NUMBER: 412867

Thank you for your feedback dated 19 Sep 2006.

2 We would like to inform you that the Land Transport Authority

(LTA) requires all lamps fitted on vehicles to comply with the Road Traffic

(Motor Vehicles, Lighting) Rules. The types of lamps must bear approved

markings to show that they comply with internationally recognised

standards, such as those adopted in European Union countries, Japan and

the United States. In addition, the lights must also conform to their

illuminated colour and intensity.

3 As far as we are aware, majorities of the authority world-wide do

not allow the retrofitting of the High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamp

system on vehicles which are not originally designed with the system.

Vehicles that are originally fitted with the HID headlamp system are

purpose built by vehicle manufacturer to ensure that they are safe.

4 Front fog lamps are auxiliary lamps, designed and manufactured to

project a less intense but more diffused light pattern. They should

only be used as a substantiate source of light beam to the headlamp during

adverse weather conditions or in occasions where visibility is very poor such

as during a heavy downpour or under hazy environments.

5 It is an offence for a person who abuses the use of fog lamps

and/or having any installation of vehicle lighting systems that do not comply

with requirements. Offenders are liable, upon conviction, to a fine of up to

$1,000 or a jail term of up to three months for first offence. Repeat

offenders are liable, upon conviction, to a fine of up to $2,000 or a

jail term of up to six months.

6 In the event if you come across any unroadworthy or illegally

modified vehicles on the roads, you can fill up the attached informant

feedback form and return it, via fax or mail, to the Vehicle

Engineering Division of LTA at 10 Sin Ming Drive, Singapore 575701.

7 We hope the above clarifies. Once again, we thank you for your

feedback.

Yours sincerely,

i hate HID too.. LoL... but true, even if u use normal Halogen bulb and ur headlight not align would be blinding to other road user... i personally know, cos one time i tilted my SUper 4 headlamps too high up.. every driver in front of me pissed off...

got one taxi all the way in front of me cover his rear mirrors cos my light were blinding him..

I'm using Philips Vison Plus .. :thumb:

Most new cars come with HID, but the headlamps are design for HID.. It doesnt give out that much glare....

Ppl change to HID using stock headlamp housing never realise that the glare is very very distracting to other road user, especially at night.. some with misalign headlamps even worse, cos ppl to have accident...

Another reason why ppl like HID nowsadays is it consume less power but give brighter light.. 35watts as compared to Halogen 55/60Watt...

anways, singapore streets are bright enuf.. even if all the street lamps blown, ur low beam still enuf...

i have slight nite blindness, dont tink i need HID on Singapore roads... Tactical driving at night with no lights in "training ground" with no headlights on still can drive mah!! LoL

Can't agree with u more abt tis. Some ppl do often go up north thus they need the bright headlights. I dun tink it is sensible to fix HIDs only for 2nd link then when in s'pore change back to normal bulbs rite? Only downside is if not aligned properly, can blind other road users. Very irritating indeed.

Not tat im supporting ppl using HIDs as i myself not using one.

i hate it too when i get blinded by these HIDs. but it also itches me to install one on my ride.

btw, is the reach (distance) of the HID further compared to those normal yellow lights?
