I agree. Cyclists who want to pedal on the footpath and expect pedestrians to tolerate them should do some simple acts:

1. Do not whizz past pedestrians from behind or assert your "right" to pedal past.

If they cannot pass safely, wait until they can. Stop or pedal behind slowly if need be. When passing, do so slowly and preferably say "passing on your right" (as appropriate).

2. When approaching oncoming pedestrians, slow down and stop if needed.

It's because of idiot cyclists who want to pedal fast and dangerously on the footpaths that cause pedestrians to oppose this. Behave themselves better and everyone can be mutually tolerant.

Similarly, some bad hats among the motorcyclists give the rest of us a bad reputation because of their behaviour and turn public opinion against us unnecessarily.

mayb we r inconsiderate. but come to think of it, there ain't much parking lots in the city area for bikes. talking about illegal parking, dun sound as if cars dun anyhow park by the road side? cars r even worse!! obstruct traffic!! pesdestrians jaywalking as if they r part of the vehicle? or simply use of handphone when crossing the road as if the road is named after them? y is it that nobody bother to take a pic of these scenes? r those legal as well?

shd i say they r jealous that they can't park cars on pavements? thats y pics of bikes on pavement is taken?

mayb those who r so free to complain shd take time to suggest to LTA, URA n other authorities to address these problems. since time is taken to write a complain letter, y not take the time to solve the prob? isn't that more appropiate? but i guess those ppl can't think straight. really a pity.

Even where there are parking spaces nearby, you see a lot of idiots parking where they shouldn't be. For instance - Far East Plaza pavement, pathway behind Paragon, Golden Shoe pavement across from car park. I wish providing parking can solve the problem, but some people obviously need a stronger incentive or disincentive to change their behaviour.

Using the reason that others behave badly to justify your own bad behaviour is most ridiculous. If you don't like pedestrians jaywalking across the road, neither do they like you riding or parking on the footpath. All of us motorcyclists are pedestrians too.

"Oh look, I own a bike! I can be a POS because there are others who are also POS around!" doesn't cut it.

At the very least, if you must park somewhere where it's not a designated parking area, make an effort to do it where it doesn't obstruct or inconvenience others. For example, instead of parking beside a continous white line, move a bit further and find a place with dashed white lines instead, or an alley.

there is only a handful that behaves like that. but all is condemn? not all bikers ride on pavement but all is condemned? not all drivers park cars on double yellow line but all is condemned? not all pedestrians jaywalk but all is condemned? isn't that the way of life?

Using the reason that others behave badly to justify your own bad behaviour is most ridiculous. yes! isn't that the way humans behave? talking bad about others n talking good about ourselves? the one that took the pic, is that person a person that follow the law? i dun think so but can anyone confirm that?

if every single human knows how to think, there will b peace on earth.

Ya its definitely wrong to park on pedestrian crossing..this im sure most of us bikers know that. But why are we bikers always targeted? Im sure many more drivers do more inconsiderate things...and if you really like to condemn bikers please go to a car forum and do it and not in a forum for bikers.

seriously in sg bikes are always an lower class....

C'mon , these business need low class bikers like us to send their items arnd rite ?

We are expected to give them the lane cos we are small and lower class?

Its really sad to see that bikers look down on themselves. If you can't even be proud of yourselves for riding bikes, how do you expect others to respect you?

If you think you are a lower class, then congratulation~, you ARE a lower class.

just sharing my experience... :

just 2 weeks ago, i was walking on the pathment using my phone, where the t-junction is just behind my back. i was walking slowly cos was trying to listen to the phone, and i was trying to listen to the phone, cos i could hear loud revving behind me. when i turned around, a scooter passed me by so closely that it's just about less than 5cm distance between us, with his pillion girlfriend staring hard at me.. feeling uncomfortable from the stare, i did approached the rider about the stare from his girlfriend. he told me that he has been trying to "blow" his engine to get me aside so that he could pass.. and probably his girlfriend is upset and frustrated that i did not give way. i explained to him that i did not even know that a bike was behind me on the pathment cos the road was so close, and i have thought that the revving was from the road.. and that i do not agree that pedestrian should or have to give way to bikes on the pathment.

well, i myself do ride on the pathment at times anyway, but i believe and do agree with some of the riders here that we should not be assertive when we are riding on the pathment as we are already wrong in the very first place. instead we should try to move slowly and have to wait for the pedestrian to pass. and should we really want to park on the pathment, make sure that we will not obstruct the pedestrian, cos we do not like to be treated that way by bikers when we are walking on the pathment. isn't it?

Well said.

It's not the end of the world if others look down on you.

It's the end of the world when you look down on yourself.

Some have such low self-esteem that they must compare themselves with the lowest common denominator of behaviour to justify their own.

If you follow some of the posts further up, the complainant "Doesnt ride a bike". [As if riding a bike suddenly gives one the right to behave badly?]

It should then follow that a motorcyclist would be in the best position to educate fellow bikers about bad biking habits, eh?

There are many motorcyclists around who don't support bad behaviour by other motorcyclists. For example, see the thread on the purported new licensee who "speed at 170 km/h after old Tampines Road".

Yes, you can't change the world, but it doesn't mean that you can't play your own part.

bikers ride on pavement is a no no. will get booked if get caught. on pavement, pedestrians have the right of way. its wrong for the rider to pressure the pedestrian in order to overtake.

yes, whether the rider choose to ride on the pavement or not, he will have to bear the consequences himself. however that does not mean that (and you are right) he can pressure any pedestrian in giving way to him.

here is my opinion as someone that both rides and drives..

motorcyclists have to deal with a lot of buildings not allowing bikes to park inside.. why is anyones guess.. worse yet.. a lot of carparks do not have obvious 'no parking for motorcycle' signs..

i once road into the cathay thinking that they allowed bikes in as the barrier had a lot of space one one side making me think that there was free parking for bikes.. anyways.. after the movie and all.. i rode out of the carpark only to be stopped by an extremely rude security guard who honestly looked like he belonged more in a coffeeshop drinking beer and leering at the tiger girls.. shirt unbuttoned, untucked, slippers.. you get the idea.. after a verbal barrage that was obviously going nowhere i just rode off.. there was plenty of space to accommodate bikes there and why they don't allow us in is a mystery we may never solve..

i often visit my friend who lives in a condo, once or twice a week.. if i drive in.. they remember my name, smile at me and wave me on.. i once rode in a was spoken to quite rudely and was even told that i was a dispatch rider.. nevermind that my bike at the time was the most expensive 2B bike you could get.. but the fact that i had a $350 topcase meant i was doing dispatch.. whatever lar..

even if we are given lots to park.. they are really too small to park comfortably and are usually situated in some ulu corner of the carpark.. i study at republic poly and the bike lots are at the furthest end of the basement carpark.. we have to walk through unsheltered walkways to get there.. there is construction equipment all around.. bloody bicycles belonging to foreign workers park in the bike lots too.. funny seeing as more than 3 quarters of the car lots are left empty throughout the day..

at ikea/giant/carrefour tampines.. there are a millions sheltered car lots.. but the bike lots are left in the middle of nowhere unsheltered.. if it rains and your raincoat is in the bike.. then what?

when vivocity first opened they did not open it to bikes.. i bet more than 200 bikes got fined for parking on the pavement the day i was there.. fortunately they had the good sense to open up the carpark to bikes.. we don't take up that much space and i am sure that most of us are ok paying a little to park our bikes in a decent place..

as for people that ride or park on the pavements.. i believe that most of us don't.. cars park all over the place too.. i have seen cars parking on pavements meant for pedestrians..

i totally agree that shopping centres should just open up their carparks to us and give us decent places to park.. we are consumers too and to assume that just because we ride makes us less likely to spend our hard earned money in their places..

thanx for bringing it up..

good first hand input by u bro!

im sure alot will agree that at one point or another

have or will come across this in their life.

it sometimes gave me an impression of those shopping malls which barred bikes from parking at their carpark that, motorcyclists are poor, that's why they cannot afford a car = motorcyclists do not have money to spend at their retail shops.. a kind of bias and against equality which we kept saying in our pledge.
