I strongly recommend RS Taichi. Got the black version of this one from Motoworld (http://motoworld.com.sg/detail.php?pid=1186). Pic below. Amazing amounts of ventilation as it's pretty much all mesh. Level 1 CE certified armour in shoulders and elbows. Quality feel overall. Minimalist design. I think I paid $150 or $160 for it.

Wow, it looks great! Just the kind of design I am looking for.

Will be heading motorworld to take a look tomorrow!

Any idea what does the different level of CE protection mean?

Level 1 or level 2 better has better protection?

The higher the level, the better it is. There are really only two levels I know of - 1 (EN 1621-1) and 2 ( EN 1621-2). But note that not all armour that comes built in jackets are actually CE certified. I've read an article that did some tests on some non-CE certified armour and found that they had less impact absorption than a cheese sandwich! Which is why I always aim to get CE certified armour, even if it's just level 1.

As to how they classify the armour, the CE certification people do an impact test on the armour and measure how much force gets transmitted through the armour - the higher the force that is transmitted, the lower the CE rating and the higher chance of you getting hurt. More details here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorcycle_armor

Thanks for the explanation!

Was reading it on wikipedia previously but didn't quite catch what they were saying. You explained it much clearer!

Yeah, gloves are not just for grips. It's more of a protective gear. If you fall, your instinct is to break fall with your palms, when you slide, you tend to use your hands again to slow and stop the slide. Leather ones can take the friction better.

People tend to neglect gears for pillon. Or rather I notice, sgeans tend to not gear up as much as you see in US. SG hot.. what about they touring inter-state across Arizona Desert?

is it better to slide on ur palm or have friction?

cos i saw another type of glove that has some kind of plastic pads on the palm part. according to the seller, its for when u fall, u slide n impact on ur jacket pads. the reason is so that u dont break any bones as apposed to having friction.

Accident can happen anytime, anywhere.

However ask yourself, do you want to fall at 120km/h or 60km/h?

Sliding is better and the seller is right. If your palms don't slide out of the way, they'll be forced to take a lot of the impact forces and this will be transmitted through your arms, risking breaking your bones (especially your scaphoid in your wrist - it's a common injury and takes ages to heal due to lower blood circulation in the area).

Let me tell you a true story. I use to wear glove when riding. So there was one day when my brother say use my bike and he pillion me. So i tot aiyah he so experience and somemore im the pillion so no need wear glove lor.

BIG Mistake. We went down.... and i fall before so i knw that its not good to "roll" yourself and not knowing which direction and where you fall to. Thus after 2 rolls i quickly get myself on knees and palm. Skid all the way in that position and then you knw how it feels.

Lesson learn is;

1) You dun plan an accident.

2) Safety gear safe you from getting sore when you bath.

Imagine you are unable to use your hands for 3 weeks. Even simple eating using fork and spoon.

Rest is up to you bro. If its not important then why would they sell it and why izit so ex? THINK....

Totally agree with you!

I usually wear gloves when i ride, but on one fateful night, i did not...

Had an accident(with a stray dog) on one of my past ride..

Not being able to control the fall...

Knee and palms when surfing on the tarmac...

6 weeks of bandaged palms + 15 stitches to the right knee...

Great to see people reading this and taking on the info. There are some great shares here.

It doesn't matter if you ride a Vespa a wave or a hayabusa. Gear up like a cosmonaut because it's not how you look when you ride that matters. It's how you look when you fall :)

Gear up for the fall, not for the ride!

Currently only wear FF/gloves while riding..

Anyone got any recommandation for mesh jacket? Still NSF, so wearing SAF boots most of the time.

Does anyone actually wear knee/elbow pads all the time? How much does it normally cost?

To ride on the road, You need skills,Stamina, or even luck.

But to be a good rider, you have to change with your environment, and adjust yourself to its rhythm.

Cultivate the confidence to face the different situations. Don't let yourself to be subdued by the environment :thumb:

Komine and taichi do affordable great quality jackets. Check out the posts before or the couple of pages back.

I rarely ride without my knee-shin guards. I always wear jacket with elbow armour. It's just a matter of getting used to it, which you quickly do after a few rides. 2 years later of daily ATGATT, it's just like wearing a helmet to me :)

wearing of gears is important.. but..

if u could prevent an accident, that will be even better..

example.. that ferrari.. at that high speed, I'm sure you can hear the sound coming if we are riding.. So check even it's in your favor..

I've been wearing shorts/slippers/t-shirt for the past 5 years.. But I ride extremely defensively.. (Not slow nor fast)

I check all lanes while riding, estimate all car's speed/behavior that's around me that my eyes can see...

But I take note of Motorcycles more.. because they can lane spit and change lane even faster..

Of cuz.. touring is a no no way for shorts/slippers/t-shirt because of wind impact and stones that's flying when you are on constant high speed.. SG so small, you cannot maintain 100km/h for more than 15min unless at night...

So I would say, it's still boils down to individual.. :)

Kindly read thru at least the intro section first before decide to post any comments.... thanks...

No it doesn't. Saying that just makes people who choose purposefully not to gear up (as opposed to those who have not researched it at all), feel like it's ok.

You can be riding for 25 years whatever type of bike without a single accident, it does not add any weight to an argument in favor of not gearing up.

Call me ATGATT Nazi, but when you say you ride in slippers and because you ride defensively, you're ok, you're just encouraging riders to do the same.

Maybe you're just an amazing rider. Maybe you've got talent for anticipating things on the road. Have you thought about it, maybe you're like Spiderman on a bike :)

But there's more inexperienced riders out there than experienced ones. More riders who do not always 100% check all the time. Who maybe like to ride faster. Or can't focus as well as you can.

If they fall, and are wearing boots, they will keep their toes.

You say gearing up is only good for touring and that since we don;t ride at 100km/h here, we won't need it.

At 60km/h, if you get gravel on your legs, I can assure you you will get injured, and it might make you make a bad move and possibly fall.

Gear is not to protect us from wind or flying things on the road. It's first and foremost to help us not get BBQed by road rash when we fall. And I can start posting photos of friends who fell in SG riding at 40km/h if you need convincing that road rash at that speed can be so deep you will need a titanium plate in your knee because it's so busted, for the rest of your life.

So ok, I agree with you that hazard oriented vision and anticipation, focus, reading ahead, being street smart on the road are definitely the best weapon when riding.

But as the saying goes, we gear up for the fall. Not for the ride.

Hope you won;t take offense from my stand here, I appreciate that we are all entitled to our opinions and I do not mean any disrespect. I just spend a fair bit of time with young riders every week, who just got their licenses and are excited about riding, and saying you can ride in slippers and be fine, is, in my opinion, not the best speech we can give them :)

well said @O'Ren

refer to my piccy in above post - http://www.singaporebikes.com/forums/showthread.php/217405-Do-you-gear-up-when-riding?p=6973567&viewfull=1#post6973567

ultimately, remember, the protective gear is not for the ride... exactly like the saying - "Dress for the fall"

and if you worry about anyone who says you look like a dumbass with all the kit on, and you agree... then you should have no business with a motorcycle

Grounded... :/
