#1...

it is normal for bike to perform slightly differently in the rain (even if airflow is not affected)

* stock air filter made of paper element so airflow is affected when it gets moist (its like the special agents suffocating their suspects with wet towels over their nose in the movies)

* K&N air filter uses the oiled cotton element so "moist block" effect on airflow is less cos its suppose to be "moist" in the first place (needs washing & oiling using K&N recharger kit)

* in the rain, air is very moist (high humidity), thus fuel air mix going into combustion chamber has higher % of water vapor, affecting the burn mix. add a dryer unit? whahahaha

if available, i'ld like to try the stainless steel types like the hurricane air filters i'm using in my car. no paper, no sticky cotton that needs oiling, just plain steel than can be washed with water and blown dry :thumb:

http://www.hurricane-racing.com/Graphics/filter-set.jpg

i ever considered "customising" an air filter by cutting out the paper element of a used stock filter unit, fabricate a mount to hold a suitably sized stainless steel filter and whoala.

anyone has used air filter unit (to be thrown away type) can pass to me?

we haven't come across someone using open pod filter but there's a simple mod to enhance airflow. some SWingers took out the airflow duct to "enlarge" air supply (see pic 3 below).

doesn't the rubber duct look like... errr... becomes 东方不败 le

http://i692.photobucket.com/albums/vv287/josephsbs/Silverwing/AirFilter.jpg?t=1279676319

i've tried this mod (using K&N) and did find some improvement in response, but later put duct back cos prefers a "smoother" SW.

simple mod, can DIY take out and put back if you know how :p

yep, indeed hurricane stainless steel is good! felt better response and power on my previous scooter with that filter. like what u say is true, the maintenance is simple and easy. btw scooby, currently u r still using knn? how often do u recharge ur filter?

:cheer:

Glad to have u in my life : ) Always love one another!

On K&N filter now. FC like suffered quite a lot. First mark gone at about 78 km with pillion all the way.

its normal, there's a change to the fuel-air mixture after switching from stock paper type to k&N filter. did you feel that the bike is easier to "pull"? if yes, then investment got returns le :)

suggest monitor FC over a few tanks while you get use it. trust me, the shiokness (thus we tend to throttle more) will go away after a while, not becos its not working anymore, but becos we got used to it le.

if FC still bad, then need to tweak the air-screws to balance up. i'm on K&N using 1.75 turns out.

Scooby for the tweaking of the air screws that u mentioned, do I need to get a balancer to assist the tweating? or I can actually just adjust the screw without the balancer? Btw to achieve the 1.75 turns out of the airscrew, I need to completely close the airscrew 1st right? But upon doing will it cause my engine to stall due to insufficent air entering my engine? Or I can actually do it with my engine off?

it is better to have a balancer (e.g. carbtune pro, or a pair of vacuum gauges) else you won't know for sure whether the levels are synchronised at same levels... else go on aga aga :p

see tech corner post #20

close screws when engine is off.

Steps

* best time to do the tweak is after a ride, when the engine is warmed up.

* stop engine and park bike on main stand at a well ventilated space.

* lift seat and remove the black seat under cover.

* before you do anything, take note of existing setting (how many turns) by turning the screw in (clockwise) slowly while counting the turns; factory setting is usually around 2 turns.

* connect the hoses of the vacuum gauges (or balancer) as shown in the manual (see attached).

* select a primary screw for referencing (say left screw for illustration). always work on 1 air-screw at a time.

* close (clockwise) the primary air-screw fully and make a marking at the "zero" point (see pic below).

* turn the air-screw out (anti-clockwise) to the desired setting, say 1.75 turns.

* repeat the same for the second air-screw; use the same setting as the primary air-screw.

* note the settings: e.g. Left 1.75 / Right 1.75.

* start engine and let it run at idle till fan starts.

* balance second air-screw to same level as primary air-screw (reference).

* adjust the idle rpm to desired level (around 1.2k); idle rpm will run when air-screw settings are changed.

* rev the engine a little and let it idle again.

* check gauge levels for both sides. if out, balance again. if same, balancing done.

* stop engine and let it cool a little.

* put back the original vacuum hose connections and the cover... job done :)

Think you can screw fully closed first and then turn 1.75 out while the engine is off. Then turn on engine to do synchro. Am I wrong here anyone?

Really must admire Honda's tight manufacturing tolerance and six-sigma QC. When closed fully, the 2 screws flat-head grooves line up perfectly parallel. So when you turn out 1.75 turns, the balance is more or less there.

That's why we pay so much for Honda. We don't get peanuts. Even Hondas from other asian countries are reliable...
