more questions:

ducati engines (current in production models) are the air-cooled (name?) 620 and 1000DS, desmoquattro (e.g. S4R), and testastretta (superbike and S4Rs), correct? what other engine families are there? (ST3 3V?)

where's a good site to learn about the engine families? or anyone can help?

Thanks!

Basically as below

DS620 ~ 1000 - aircooled engine.

Desmo 2 valve engine - ST2

Desmo 3 valve engine - ST3

Desmoquattro 4 valve engine - ST4/748//916/996

Testrasomething - narrower "latest" 4 valve desmo engine. 998/749/999

Then within the same family, have some "S","R","DS" designations

that denotes the specs of the bike/engine.

http://www.ducati.com would be a goood place to start off with.

4 valve would have more HP and peak torque usually at the top end of the RPM

2 valve would have less HP and the torque would be at the lower curve of the RPM

3 valve compromise between the above 2.

Good luck.

Thanks ktkt. browsed through ducati.com, understand the S/R variants on base model, basically same engine but different suspension/brakes/bodywork.

also read somewhere about the peakiness of the 4V engine compared to the 2V.

now i am wondering if people have experiences with 2V air cooled engines overheating at tropical temperatures?

(sorry, previous posts have too many questions all lumped together)...

Hi fellow duke riders, I was at Changi at 8.30pm 26th Saturday for the meet-up but no one was there ?? I believe that if we were to have a more cohesive D.O.C group , there should be some commitment on all, include the organisers , how can we ever emulate HOG when a simple meet-up is not properly planned ! I always envisage a sight of many Ducatis parked together Monsters, 999s , 749s 996s916s etc.... multistradas , will be quite a sight ,

Could you imagine the cumulative sounds emitted by a dozen Dukes phew wee !!

Could be that Changi Village is too far in the East , perhaps a more centralise place could be better for all !!! I know BMW riders are very cohesive , they meet-up once a month , I was in Minerva and had a good chat with Tiffany and she is trying to organise an event for Duke owners, I agreed with her that it was a tedious task organising any activity, it is made worse when the group is not as responsive,

I have seen Hyundai Tucson groups, Rav4 groups etc>...... etc... at Kallang and the turnout always good, Come on Ducatist , we can't be that elitist as this ,

May I suggest , just my 2cts worth ok lest anyone gets offended and shoots hail of arrows at me !!! Let,s get commited, meeting people with the same interest, same Brand of bikes etc... makes the ownership more interesting , meet and chat etc.....we could do day meet-up even if it is for an hour or so, slowly the group gets interesting & start to tlak , of course they want to meet up more & spend more time with each other to chat Duke langauge !!Let's poll

How bout this Thursday evening? A friend introduced me to a nice place along Bukit Timah road, quite central. We'll go ahead if response is good!

And yes, dozens of Ducatis together sound awesome. :thumb:

I'm riding a Superbike, and although I love the rush that comes after like 6000rpms, I only get to use those engine speeds doing acceleration bursts on the NSH, or on the track.

Other than that, most of the riding is done below 7krpms. Having tried out the incredibly torquey 1000DS engine, I seriously don't mind changing to a Supersport or Monster M1000. Why?

Lower maintenance costs, less parts, and the bike costs significantly less. And I don't loose out any performance in most situations. In fact, I find the 2V air cooled motors have better character than the superbike engine.

Nevertheless either choice you make, I'm sure you'd still enjoy the bike. :thumb:

:D

Duke gathering? I think a healthy turn out I've seen so far are the earlier track sessions.

I've seen Red Rocket, NoLogicOne, Flowers. 3 dukes at the track a few times earlier this year.

Now with Neo also, there'll be 4 duckies.

Yeah man, I truly agree!!! :cheer:

Another point to take note of is perhaps during weekend, some of the Duc Owners may not be able to turn-up due to family commitment (from feedbacks i got). As such, may i suggest that we have 2 meet-ups per month. One on weekend & another on weekday.

Let's also try scouting for a regular place to meet up. For a start, we could try out various locations.....rotating them to see which is the best. Subsequently, it will be a hang-out place for Duc Owners! Let get somewhere that provide us with big screen to watch Motor GP.

Any other votes or suggestions? :cheer:

Not too sure abt the air-cooled engines but for my ST4, traffic jams/slow traffic will cause the coolant temperature to sometime hit 120 degree Celsius. (Fan will auto-kick in at abt 110 degree Celsius/opt install a switch to manual start it)

It's damn hot. Even on a cool night, I will come home sweaty cos of the heat if I get stuck at a traffic.

As for the "peakiness", really depends on ur preference and riding style.

But it's a v-twin, so somehow it's still torquey.

makes me a lazy rider, seldom shift gear.

What you're looking at? (which bike)

wah lan eh. 120 is almost limit of coolant temp already, right?

yeah, a friend warned me abou this - that regardless of bike engine design, once the power crosses 60+ HP, can say goodbye to cool and dry legs when riding in slower speeds.

not much driving experience on bikes yet, but being pillioned on some big bikes before, i get the v-twin/flat twin versus I4 "japanese sewing machine" comparison.

knowing the riding that i am going to be doing, mostly commute, and occasionally trips north, i think a good bike would be something with low down torque, cos most times, in singapore traffic, reaching the powerband of big I4 bikes would be quite dangerous to licenses, so therefore i am almost decided on a big twin.

wondering now whether to get a multistrada 1000S DS, Monster S2R1000, or an Aprilia Tuono 1000R.

i like the look of a neat air-cooled desmo under the steel trellis; the liquid cooled versions just look too busy, as one magazine wrote: as if it just collided into the plumbing section of home depot...

oh yeah. seeing one of your photos on your blog, the first trip you took with the 999 (it's public, right? :cheeky:), the one where you were in a left bend and you took a photo through the windscreen - the photo showed your tacho at approx 5k rpm and digital speedo at 98 km/h ?!

what gear was that? to think that there is 7000 rpm more to go!

when you say "better character", what do you mean, actually?

The cleaner lines of the air-cooled engines on the Monster looks nicer than the watercooled ones.

Multistrada sounds like the bike of your choice.

Commuting/occasional trips up north/air cooled

Or the ST line.

Anyway, whatever your choice is, I think Ducati would be a safer bet in terms of support wise locally. (rather than Aprillia or Cagiva exotics)

i'm surprised. isn't ducati even more exotic? or are you trying to say that there are significant differences in the level of support between the aprilia and ducati dealers?

any experiences you can share? or maybe even PM/email me?

have you sold your ST4 yet?

guys ... i'll be sending my monster for servicing soon. how long does the bike has to be at minerva workshop usually..? coz the other time i went over to get some parts...there were like 10+ ducatis parked there(obviously waiting to be serviced) :giddy:

i use my bike as daily transport so if u guys could provide any info ... please do ! thks ! :cheer:

I *think* Ducati parts should you need any maintainance/servicing, they are readily available from Minerva. Qualified mechanics from Minerva and erm, Kallang Cycles. ( At least they work often enough to learn from their mistakes that's wat I think)

Imagine if you have a MV Agusta(now tat's exotic) which a mechanic whom have never worked on before. As good as the mechanic is....

Was thinking of trading in my ST4 for a new one but no.1 is money no enuff.

No. 2, prefer the older non-high tech wiring harness. Notice nowadays, a lot of the newer bikes comes with alot of elcetronics (HISS, immobiliser etc)

Tat's my opinion....

Anyway, the ST4 is not a good bike to travel at low speed.

It's jerky at slow RPMs and slow speed. It's still a superbike engine.

But that's how I like it.

Anyway, look out for the next Ducati meeting on this thread.

Perhaps you can view the different bikes and get different opinions that

might help confuse your choice of bike. Might even deter you and get a sewing machine instead.

hello bro

sorry for not turning up on sat, as there was not a single respone from here of anyone wanting to turn up, i told ktkt we would have to give it a miss for the sat outing. do spare a thought for us as we would not want to be the only one turning up at changi village esp when the weather dont look so promising.

having spoken to tiffany on sat, it has been decided that

- early notice need to be given for her to mass email the dukes owners

- choose a more centralise location

- annnnndddd hope that someone will turn up.

- and seems like sat afternoon when i drop by minerva always managed to see someone familiar there :cheer: might as well meet at minerva ;)

hope to tried again for next sat 11.12.05, can i get any respone from fellow ducatist. a simple "ok i can make it" will help tremendiously.

the 1st sat thingy is not going to work cos' no one will turnup (my personal thoughts la) i think we need more organiers to make sure there will be someone there before others will follows.

hi bro,

if you are using your bike for daily communting in busy spore roads, the best chioce might be a jap bike like superfour, wave, scooters etc.

the dukes really sucks when we are stuck in traffice, the clutch alone will kill your left arm. only on the open road like expresswaydo you get to enjoy the bike.

if you are worried abt your licence all the more you shouldnt get the big litre dukes.... they are built to go fast broo.

I think we should just meet up and discuss this instead of using so much forum space!

Sorry, I'm abit lazy to reply to all the questions :D

Hi DOC, Thanks for the reply, I like too your idea to meet at Minerva on a Sat afternoon, think must suggest to Mary get some ornage squash drinks on the thermo not very expensive and sen dthis thread to her, cos tiff was really trying to involve more Duke owners to feel that we all belong to a group , and the sooner we all feel we are part of a group , the interest to meet up becomes more intnse, have we not sometimes walk up to a group of bikers and if there is not dialogue etc,.... won't join for the next outing ,I am more than excited to help to organise such meetings .

BTW which Saturday DOC are you referring to , the dates don't seem to gel le ! Are you referring to Saturday 10 of December cos 11th is a Sunday , if that is the case I will forwrd this to Tiffany and see what can be done ,could sort of make it into a Christmas meeting, and if we all can contribute a small sum of say $10 maybe we get more than just ornage squash ha !!!! . Duke owners spread the word around and get more involved in this thread,

Really would like to see many Dukes together for a ride one of these days to somewhere nearby , Mersing or Desaru Sat morning ride done by Mid-day !!!
