Hi guys, I'm a new phantom rider, sorry if I ask 2 noob question...

1. Can I ask if the IU eats battery charge even when bike is turn off and sit in the carpark? If so, is there a way to turn it off or is it illegal to make a switch to turn off?

2. I parked my bike for a few days (never touch at all) .

Just now first try to start can hear the spark plug but it fail to start. Then after a few tries cannot even hear the spark plug.. and totally no sound. I think my battery seem maybe flat, and I push start it myself.. I was overjoyed when I see the bike spring to life. But my joy was shortlived, because I ride a few rounds, park, drink a coffee and come back to bike and again cannot start.

I wonder why after riding a few rounds the battery should charge up a bit right? How come still cannot start? Is my battery spoilt by not using it few days? The neutral light and headlights and horn still work though cannot start.. do I need to pushstart it everytime from now? Will pushstart and let the engine idle for maybe 1hour charge the battery?

Now my feeling is half sad half frustrated.. please help advice me if you can especially what should I do.. really appreciate it.

@Sadnewbie

no need to make a switch for your IU la ;) nobody does that anyway  it doesn't consume that much energy as what you think

I think your bike must be quite old already right? maybe your battery uplorry already.. go and check the voltage and you will know

Only 2 possibilities.

1. Battery is old and cannot hold the charge like what the others have said.

2. The connector to the battery is loose happens to single cyclinder bikes somethimes, especially after long rides where the bike was vibrating for long hours from riding long distance at high speeds. Take out the seat then tighten the screw holding it. Or if you want to be more thorough, remove the connector, clean it then tighten it back.

I would try to check the connector first if I were you, because I experienced what you experience before and I know it can't be the battery because it's a new battery that time.

Thanks bros for giving advice, really appreciate it. I wasn't hopeful that there will be so many help within 24hrs!

The battery is supposed to be quite new from what the seller told me, so I think maybe its not a gone case batt.. maybe the charge leak out?

Some noob questions (sorry i am so blur please bear with me..)

1. If I push start the bike and let the engine run at idle for maybe one hour, will it charge the battery even though the bike not moving?

2. If I bring to repair shop, should I change battery or tell them to recharge the battery?

3. I really want to open the seat to check the connectors, but the seller didn't pass me the tools, do anyone know any place to buy it?

Posted

1. If the connector is loosen, bike run for 24 hours also cannot charge what.

2. Ask to recharge battery first, if after that still cannot then change.

3. Already replied your other post in Phantom buy and sell

I can sell you mine.

But trust me, go mustafa buy get the bigger better ones, they are easier to use.

Where you stay? If near, can lend you mine tools.

i had same problem before.

brought the 3 mth old new bike back to dealer, and was told that the IU can eat the battery when parked for long periods. hence the IU was disconnected from the direct connection to the battery 24/7, and will only be connected once engine started and running. this works ok for the past 2 yrs now.

separately, it could also be due to a battery that needs replacing - although u said that it is supposed to be new. well, i was told that batteries ought to be changed ard every 2 yrs.

cheers.

seriously i feel IU wouldnt EAT battery la.. it uses such a small amt of current.. if bike left for say 1-2 weeks then ok la.. 1-2 days wont affect one.. best way to solve is check d connector, then use a voltmeter to check ur battery b4 starting (wif lights off at least 12.5v), and after the engine running (at least 13.5v).... if b4 starting lower than 12.5, battery gone... if after starting ard 12, ur charging system problem... though i tink urs shud be fine since u push start can ride...

Thanks for your continued follow up help bro, really appreciate it very much. Yes I will get the tools ASAP maybe tomorrow if can sneak out from work early:D I hope is connector issue cos it may be the only thing I can fix myself :D

If end up I have to fix battery, can I ask

Is there a significant difference between a new battery that lost charge and got recharged by mechanic, vs a new battery that never lost charge before?

(I am scared to take chances for now to experiment... can't imagine if I have to push start on the road with traffic behind......)

I stay at AMK, but I think ok I should buy my own set of tools so I can do regular maintenance as well as tinker with the bike to understand it better. Thanks for your offer though, it is very generous of you to offer to lend to a complete stranger. Appreciate it very much :)

there are usually 2 ways that the IU is connected.

1 is directly to the battery, so even if you off engine, when you insert cashcard and can see the value, means its directly to the batt.

2nd is through a relay, which only powers the iu when the bike is turned on.

regardless, the IU draws a small amount of battery although leaving it unridden for long periods like a month or so will draw abit of power.

most likey is battery issue.

ts, just get a new battery, not that expensive also. 38 bucks i believe.

oh dear.. I was hoping it to be battery problem that I can fix myself.. is it possible to change starter carbon myself? I have read the phantom manual back to back several times but inside didn't mention starter carbon at all.. :s

Starter carbon aside, do any bros have any recommendations regarding brand of battery to use? Or is it just tell the shop I want 12v motorcycle battery? I still hoping very hard that if I change the battery the problem will be solved miraculously.. really hope is not a problem that have to tow to workshop to fix! Worse come to worse, think I have to let workshop troubleshoot... I kept hearing about Planet workshop mentioned.. does anyone know whether they provide towing service to their workshop?

Push start your bike (if cant start), ride it to Ahkoon, comfirm he'd settle it for you.

Battery or starter carbon, even both wont cost more thn 150bux i believe.

or you can do it the ah chong way and really take a piece of wood and whack the fuse area behind the right side chrome cover.

it worked for me when my battery was overcharged from faulty rectifier, which could be your issue as well.

Really bro??? but how come whack the fuse area will solve overcharged battery? It loosen the fuse?

Ahkoon is at LengKok Bahru.

Nope, he doesnt do towing. Neh, wont be a problem if you ride properly, make use of engine break, clutch in early whn stopping etc.

Yah.. but to tell you the truth, I haven't ever let workshop full body check this bike yet since I bought over recently... so I'm very worried the bike may have other undetected problems also... scary to ride on a bike that I have no confidence in and dangerous to ride it when psychologically I will not want to stop it and risk stall....

bro, trust the bike ah, if it can still travel, it will bring you places, at least to the mechanic. Then tell him what you think is wrong, then let him do. Can go down to planet also. No need to waste $$$ on towing. Depends where you stay.

Got bike must ride!

hey, my phantom ta200 when i turn my handlebar to the extreme right when in neutral gear, it will auto rev quite abit until i turn back my handlebar.

it happened to my friend's ta200 too. Not too worried about it just wondering if others experience it, and seeing if anyone knows why

Your Throttle "free-Play" is too "tight" need to adjust - loosen it

exhaust header cracked or broken.

its the part directly after the exhaust manifold. right at the begining of the exhaust header. Ah chong went to kick the exhaust and the whole thing was abit loose.

300 for brand new, 80 for 2nd hand. look around.

wanna check if exhaust leak is bad for engine?

if im not wrong, ur low-end power will be lesser since thr is lesser backpressure n ur bike will run leaner (hotter engine). same after-effects as installing aftermarket exhausts..

in severe cases, the reduced backpressure can damage valves.. Correct me if im wrong.. :)
