Help.. today I bought a voltmeter to test.. the following is my readings... I know my battery gone but the charging system also gone ma?

voltage readings:

Bike is cold, I totally didn't do anything, took out seat and straight away put the probes at battery: 10.95v

push start the engine and rode around half hr, test while engine idling: 12.40v

turned off engine and immediately test: 11.88v

2min after engline off: 11.81

6min after engine off: 11.72

10min later with engine still off: 11.70v

Any opinions will be appreciated... is it the charging system spoilt? Or is the running voltage low because battery spoilt? If I buy new battery will charging system spoil it too? This present battery is supposed to be quite new from what seller told me... maybe spoilt by charging system? But when I test rode the bike it was ok and then only after not touching the bike a few days then suddenly cannot start the bike :s

you gotta rev the bike.

turn on your headlamp, rev the bike and read the voltage at the same time. anything more than 16v is frying your battery. thats the rectifier overcharging your battery. happened to me before.

and probably something is draining your battery when you leave it.

Ok I'll rev tomorrow and see... in the meantime, 12.40v without headlights and without rev, is it a sign of trouble with rectifier?

Yes I also wondering what is eating the battery.. everything on the bike is stock and no adding anything extra... :s or is it spoilt battery thats why the voltage drop by itself? (The battery is Shinco brand by the way, is it ok brand?)

ok i just let u knw wat a normal phantom charging system on bike currently shows:

b4 start engine (headlights OFF): at least 12.4v

iding (headlights OFF): 14.4v

idling (headlights ON): 11.9v to 12.4v

riding: at least 14v

if u are not getting these numbers, im pretty sure sumting is wrong.. definitely ur battery going soon since u on ignition it only shows 10+ volts. brand-wise, im using d same battery as u. shud be fine. mine use for 4 mths still cranking strong.

Thanks a lot Naim, I observed that all my readings is about 2v lower than yours, however the increments and decrements when are about the same. Does anyone know whether that means my charging system is ok and just my battery is spoilt?

Also, how do you test the riding voltage? Is it same as rev the throttle? When I rev for a few seconds the voltage only increased a tiny bit around 0.3v . The voltage jumps around but shows a slow increasing trend the longer I rev. Is it suppose to jump 2v immediately when the engine rev?

Hi, PK experts

I am thinking to get a used phamtom for transport, however, need some advise from you guys.

a) For a almost 10 yr old phantom, what are the common problems I may faced.

b) And how much I might need to spend to touch up the bike?

Thxs guys

sry to say but i tink there is an issue wif ur charging system. definitely not normal and might go pretty soon. whilst its still ok, send it to planet to rectify ah. hopefully its jux the rectifier which wont't be as ex as the coil..

a) common problems are the cam chain tensioner. u will hear a tick-tick-tick sound frm the engine. its a cheap fix (less than $100) but very expensive if it decides to go.

another is engine blowby if the engine isnt maintained well. rev it hard and u shud not see at whitish smoke. if there is, prepare at least $400 for a top overhaul.

clutch could slip as well if its alr worn out.

gearbox- make sure u can get into every gear easily.

brake systems could need an overhaul (service calipers, brake pumps, new discs n new pads)

and make sure all the electricals n lightings work. best if u can get a voltmeter to test the charging system at the same time.

b) hard to say. depends on the condition of the bike u r getting. if purely cosmetic, paintwork will set u back ard $300-$400 i tink. mechanicals wise, i suggest u go over to the price of repairs thread.

Hey guys, any idea if our Phantom can fit this for front headlight

http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/487666744/Xenon_HID_H6_M.html ?

or, must it be the whole package like..

http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/319267562/HID_xenon_kit_H6_M.html ?

Please advice! Thanks many!

you can but our phantom lenses are reflector type, so using these will scatter the light beam all over, blinding other road users, which i don't suggest.

you can always change the bulb if you find your current one not bright enough.

Any recommendation for which brand of bulb to change to and where to get it? I've already changed mine to a white light one from Lim Battery but it's still not that bright.

I see.. Thanks for the advice.

So, how can we get bright enough ones like xavez mentioned?

white light will never be bright.

yellow light will be the brightest and most obvious to traffic.

if you notice, white light does not penetrate alot during rain.

so if you want brighter lamps, go for the stock yellow/orange light.

we can't use h4 as ours is not compatible unless rewire and all that stuff. or you can install spotlights to your crashbar, then will be super bright.

Hi, I'm a new rider and don't know any thing about servicing. I'd like to have my bike checked and top up engine oil. Is there a place near Jurong West area you would suggest to bring my bike to? It's an old TA150.

Thanks,

Posted

if in terms of convenience, u can go to Unique Motors at Toh guan.. find their details in the Advertiser's Board... but mixed reviews frm there. i will only go there for basic servicing.

however, most PK ppl here will recommend Planet la.. i only trust Ah Chong there to do any major jobs on my bike.. tell him to do full check on ur bike on stuffs like ur brakes, wheel bearings, chain/sprockets, clutch, etc. or even better, full servicing if u have just gotten your bike.. like change engine oil, change coolant.
