Read what happen to her, sad such a young beautiful girl has so many scars.... She even lost her entire left breast! :sian:

http://www.rockthegear.org/index.php?/testimonials/view/brittany_morrow_the_roadrash_queen/

I had shed my prescription glasses for a pair of sunglasses, my cowboy hat for an oversized helmet, and quickly thrown on a pair of capri jeans, tennis shoes, and a sweatshirt over my bikini. I thought nothing of the fact that I had practically no protection against the asphalt if anything were to happen. I figured that we couldn’t get into a wreck, it simply wouldn’t happen to me. It’s amazing how fast life came at me that day.

Poor breast. I mean, poor girl.

Ride carefully when you have a pillion, don't speed...

I don't find it sad. I find it very scary. In fact, so scary I just told myself "Ok, forget about riding."

I realize now that before buying a bike, one should budget for gear. And I might just do that, delay my bike's buy another month or two, to be able to afford complete full gear..

Wa Lau! That Shaun was going too fast lah!

For the wind to blow someone way, the bike has to be going at least 130km/hr, and that is provided the person was sitting up straight to catch the max wind blast.

To be blown off the bike from a crounch position behind the rider, the speed must have been around 180-200km/hr.

so what do your pillion riders wear? i am in a quandary about this myself. that is why i do not pillion anyone out on the roads. the only thing i do is to pillion my boys in the top floor of a mscp and i let them wear a helmet.

When I do eventually get my license, I'll ensure my pillion wears the same safety gear as me; leather jacket, gloves, boots and pants. Otherwise, I wouldn't allow them to pillion. It's just not worth it at all.

Pillion should wear exactly the same thing as the rider, or even more: if you know you're going to pillion someone (bf, gf, wife, husband, brother, sister, child whatever it's all the same), you need to make sure they have the proper gear. It's your responsibility if they hop on the bike without the gear, very much more than theirs. And most of the time, we pillion the same person, and quite regularly, so it's not lost money as they're gonna use it a lot.

Plus, we tend to pillion people that are dear to us, right? Wouldn't you want them to be even more protected than you? In that case, it's best to budget for both bike users: the rider and the pillion.

I don't see why a pillion shouldn't wear: FF helmet, proper gloves (armor + pads), proper armored jacket, armored pants or at least knee pads and boots. And if they think it's too much and don't need to wear "all that" 'cause they're not the one riding the bike, well there's a chance you're not convincing enough

mmm, if seldom pillion people, you also wouldn't invest in additional protection gear. And the armoured jacket must be fitting, the helmet must be fitting in order to provide the most effective protection.

Also, you will have 2x the headache of where to store the gear. Imagine u 2 go shopping and your bike also have only 1 box. put 2 fullface. Gone. U wear the rest of your gear go shopping and eat dinner.

a delicate balance of protection and convenience. as individuals, we will eventually have to decide where we stand in that line.

Even if put full face in a box... Got thief.. Gone too...

I'm a cantankerous lugubrious weirdo. Enraptured by stone walls. Demented by love. Disparaged by my own soul. Besieged by languor. Suffered from acute distress triggered by terminal boredom and elucidation of rhodonderons and deciduous seedlings. Searched for serenity amidst the chaos but failed miserably.

I agree, it can be troublesome.

So much gear. One complete gear set is troublesome already, but two?! Where the hell to put all that stuff? "We're not going to Mars, we're going to Plaza Singapura for heaven's sake !"

Yeah, well, for now, we have to deal with it the way it is. Safety first.

I've been thinking about this question for weeks. Going through storage options (box? bags ? ehm, chain everything to the bike?) and the answer is just plain clear to me now: I don't want to take risks because I can't be bothered with too much gear.

Solutions you ask? here are some:

- use the bike accordingly: you take your pillion to friend's houses, relative's, public places where you can hang around or store your gear. (picnic in the park!)

- if there's shopping to do together, let's take the bus. We can hang around malls in flipflops, eating ice cream while we window shop, without being concerned about who's gonna steal our helmets.

- if you HAVE TO use the bike (long trip, faster..), then the pillion stays home because it will be too troublesome to carry around two sets of full gear.

And yes, I agree with you zyrofillica, the gear must fit. So you can't just randomly pillion people. But really, who pillions people randomly? You own a bike or a taxi? :D Usually the pillion is the same person that's why I mentionned it's worth the investement.

PS: for the diner situation, if it's a date (i.e new person), take public transport there, you'll impress him/her with your bike later. If it's someone who's used to you already, well, they must appreciate that you're a responsible rider and gear up, and should have no problem with it. I have a biker friend who's always fully geared up, and him and his wife have this habit when they go for diner in some restaurant: when they call for reservation, they ask if the restaurant can keep their gear while they have diner ! It's never been a problem so far, restaurant staff stores it when they arrive and hand it back when they leave.

There is always a solution. I agree that a balance must be found between protection and convenience but in no way should it be found at the expense of protection.

Actually its not that troublesome to carry gear.. I have a box, but i find my office laptop is bulky... LoL...

I used PacSafe Stuff Safe 80L previously.... Helmet, boots, gloves and jacket all just stuff inside and lock to the bike frame.... When not in use, the bag folds into a small pouch you can wear....

Link: http://pac-safe.com/www/index.php?_room=3&_action=detail&id=42

For added theft deterence i bought a LockAlarm, small little thingy... but freaking loud alarm, really ear drum piercing... Shld deter theft

Now i dont use all that cos i don't go onsite during work and most of the time i take public transport when i wanna go out.. Only ride to commute to work..
