Must score in exam first hor:-)

Today's Planet Motors story involves valve clearance. It's a part of warranty service for 4 stroke bikes. However between the "full service" and the "change engine oil & plug", I rarely hear about valve clearance checks being done and some shops charge upwards of $60 for the job!

Here's how $15 at Planet can make an old rough running bike turn over a new leaf:

Insulating or wrapping the exhaust in aluminum foil prevents heat from escaping from the exhaust gas at the header. The more expensive fibreglass or titanium wraps may also be used, but I designed a foil wrap as the heat reflective properties are more predictable and easily calculated.

Hotter exhaust gases flow faster than cool exhaust gases. This increases the rate of heat flow OUT of the engine bay, DECREASING engine temperature.

This makes the stock Phantom exhaust sound and feel like a sports exhaust, with reduced backpressure, quieter running and faster throttle response. It also solves some overheating problems with this hot, relatively high compression engine (for a carbureted motor), allowing more aggressive engine tuning to be run.

While some question the intent of tuning a Phantom for high performance use.... it's quite a practical and needful venture as it is a 2B bike and the only way it can go 100kph on the highway is if we rev it up to 7k to 10k RPM!

Factory stock old Phantoms tend to overheat their engine oil and break down after extended "heavy duty" use because the cooling needs of the engine are not looked after. We use synthetic oil and wrapped headers for this reason.

Sorry to cut in just like that, 1: tapping sounds on cold starts and 2 : Tapping sounds all the time. Does that meant it's two different problems?
