I just got my first Harley after countless numbers of bikes.. Have always wanted a harley but just couldn't find the right time to get it.. I swear that this is the best bike I have riden so far comparing to other makes.. In fact it also fits my lifestyle as I now rides occasionally..

To me if the bike is you for transport purpose then it's fine.. But if getting a tourer and never tour then what's the point just like getting a sports bike and not go track.. It just defeats the purpose.. Can never get the full potential of the bike... No offence to the rest but that's just how I view it..

One doesn't really need a superbike, or a fancy tourer or cruiser. You just want it.

 

Just go with what you like. Personally I don't really like cruisers or Harleys. But that's just me.

So.... YMMV. Go with your gut feeling.

its jus like why u like a ger, it the first sight or the feel liao (for me).. most ask y u like her, most cant answer that ques...some bike don look great like cb400, i jus find it uncle initally, in the end i fall in love wif it and buy it but sell away after a yr due to short distance riding don need 400cc, due to the boreness i bought back an s4 same design... sorry for my crap =p

First of, Throttle, looking at your watch collection, I see where you were going.

 

Secondly, I feel that buying a harley is buying into the harley lifestyle not the bike. No one is going to be talking or asking about how high your bike revs or whats the top speed etc. Because its unequivocal that there are cheaper bikes out there with lesser displacement that will outperform the harley. Once taken ownership of a Harley, it would be equivalent to embarking on an unending journey of eBay scouring and chop shop hunting. But of course, that is the fun part, your wallet would gladly disagree...

 

Thirdly, with the Harley bike pre se, you get very little for a premium price. I've test ridden the Sportster '48', the V-Rod and the Iron and came away unimpressed. With the Harley stock, you get an impression that the marketing people at Harley had more say than the designers and the machine guys because everything you come to love prior ownership of a Harley is achieved thru thousands of dollars worth of modifications and aftermarket parts. Pop down to the dealer and start any Demo bike any you'll know what I am on about.

 

Fourthly, the bikes have very tall gearing from the factory. I was crusing on the expressway doing 90km/hr in 3rd gear. Throttle response is appalling, handling is surprisingly alright, I thought it would steer like a pizza but it was alright. All in all, I concluded the test ride in disappointment, I was expecting a lot more from a harley. In a nutshell, you are paying so much for so little.

 

My thoughts, I mean no offense to harley owners.

If you buy with your head, many things are not worth while in our consumer market (LV bags, 600 dollar jeans, 30k watches, etc.)

 

If you buy with your heart, anything that puts a smile on your face is worth it regardless of the cost.

 

Happiness is priceless so if you can buy something that makes you happy, that's good expenditure

Hehe. It's only lousy if it doesn't fit your needs.

 

Diff ppl have diff needs. Some want performance, handling, speed.

Others just want style, a nice bike to cruise and pose with, and to join a bunch of other like minded leather/color-clad buddies to hang out with. So it works for them.

Like B3nn said above, Harleys are expensive, slower than a lot of class 2 bikes and also can't do much. Rode a ktm super motard before I got my Harley last year, first week was hell. Can't corner as good, can't squeeze traffic, can't play curbs and stairs and the worst part is the braking. For a bike of that weight, my Sportster should come with better brakes.

 

But still, I love my Harley.

You buy Harleys for the lifestyle, not the bike itself, the bike itself is a machinery that makes little real world sense, hell its slower than most class2, some 2As and even 2Bs...they don't make particularly good long distance tourer...most of them can't corner...most of them can't go offroad yet I think they make awesome bikes...IMO V-twins weren't meant to be on sportbikes, you'd have to cheat with displacement for them to be competitive, like how 4 strokes cheat with 2 strokes with twice the displacement
