hi guys... would a harley be suitable for daily commute to/from work? If so, which models should i look at?

weekends r usually with family usually will be driving... not much time to go riding. is it a waste to get a harley?

 

what are your enjoyment of owning a harley? would u get ur current ride if its just for the transport to work?

I ride my Street Bob to work everyday. Total riding time about 1hrs 30 min everyday.

 

All that crap from work goes away the moment I start the engine

I buy harley....

I wear vest...

I patch founder on my vest coz I'm cool...

I ride to forum for coffee....

I park the bike in front of coffee shop...

I put on shades....

I now look cool...

I don't wear half cap helmet coz it's illegal...

I have a chain attached to my wallet...

I wear LTA approve helmet coz I've got no balls to answer to the authorities...

I send bike service/add accesories to harley singapore coz I need recognition from them...

I don't ride across the causeway coz dangerous...

My insurance don't cover up north highways...

I spent $3K plus for J&H pipes...

I make bike bling bling...

I ride daily to work so my neighbours/colleague can see me ride harley...

 

So to answer your question on riding a harley on daily purpose then the answer yes of coz you can...

It's not a matter how wide the bike is or how heavy the bike is....

It's about how you want to be recognize riding a harley...

Oh come on you are not a small boy who pass the license yesterday...

Be practical and truthful to yourself on why you want to ride a Harley...

Is it the lifestyle or is it about recognition or is it is just whatever the reasons are...

You want practicality then you see the thousands of bikes crossing the causeway...

That bike is practical to ride to go work...

Easy to ride...

Can park anywhere...

No need afraid people steal your bike...

Easy maintenance...

Can even carry the bike up the curb if need too...

after reading ur reply & Throttle's post somewhere, i know wat to do liao.. gonna buy used bike, use for a while then change n change... I used to have 2 bikes, 1 for weekend but with a kid, end up just sitting idle.

Every bike i buy, i say, its the last and final, but a year later i change anotherr.

easy maintenance, easy riding.

Riding only Saturday night clocking about 20-30km weekly or no more than 1500km per year.

 

every year change oil once, go inspection once and renew insurance and road tax once.

My colleague ride his 48 Iron to work. I used to ride my '06 Fat Boy to work too.

 

My enjoyment of owning a Harley is being looked at and also the raw engine power when I accelerate on the highway.

Hey folks! Will finally be taking my Class 2 this June and thus end a 4 year journey to become a Harley owner! The reason I would like to ride a Harley is because of the freedom it represents, and as a form of rebellion against accepted norms, the choice of an alternate lifestyle. I would like to tour, in groups or solo it doesn't really matter, up north and perhaps beyond. It was always my opinion that Harleys were made to do this, i.e. cruise long distances, but as I learnt more about them, I realised that this isn't always the case!

 

There are such a bewildering number of models to chose from, that I simply cannot decide which to best suit my needs. I've always liked bobber-styled bikes, like the '48, so that narrows it down a little. But then again, are Sportsters the right bike for my touring needs? Heard they vibrate like crazy and aren't comfy enough for long-haul trips. And then there is the matter of that tiny 7.9L tank...

 

The best Harleys for touring I've learnt, are the gigantic Road Kings, Street Glides, Ultra Glides etc... Now, these surely aren't the right bikes for a Class 2 newbie are they?! Besides, they aren't just massive vehicles, they come with an equally massive price tag!

 

Is there something in-between that you guys can recommend? Or will a Sportster / Nightster be alright? Also, I've heard that Harleys need to be ridden daily, and that if they're not, part after part will fail leading to a maintenance nightmare. I have no intention of riding the Harley daily, I've got other bikes for that. So I was very skeptical upon hearing this, and thus am asking in an open forum full of Harley owners...how true (or false) is this?

 

Lots to learn from you guys so appreciate any feedback you may have to give. Many thanks in advance!

All Harleys vibrate , some more than others, but when cruising the vibration is not that bad.

Sportsters are fine for touring except the low range mileage due to small tank as you already know

48s are meant for city riding, not touring.

i recommend the Dyna range which is good for both city and tour.

otherwise, japanese sport tourers are really the best machines for long distance touring imo.

i ride my HD once a week. Heck, i ride all my bikes once a week. So dont worry.

Dyna huh? Thanks, but I find them a little too bland for my liking. Maybe a softtail or street bob I dunno! Anyways, I won't be in the market for a bike until late this year, so still have time to research.

 

Just once a week and no problems low usage? Guess the myth is busted then! Haha!

It is true that I don't know yet what I want to ride. How could I? I don't even have my Class 2! Google has served the world well, me included! But sometimes, there's nothing like hearing things from actual Harley owners here in Singapore. Just part of my research. But will definitely take your advice to test ride my shortlisted bikes before making any decision...once I get my big bike license.

 

Would definitely love to custom the bike, but it has to be within the boundaries of the law. Don't wanna have to dodge LTA every time I ride out! Yeah, who cares about what others think, say what you wanna say dude! Always.
