chill... anyways i deliberately make grammatical error... so that u can laugh... i am fine with u laughing... seriously i am... wat is the big deal...?? tnagolima pointed out a mistake... and he made 1... he has the right to edit or delete his post...

Gee.. I didn't know that you have to type good English even in this kind of informal forum. But what humours me more, after years in this forum, is to find people like Tangolima here, sitting bravely behind the keyboard, picking on other people's language and structural grammars. Gee.. I really don't know what pleasure you get from it.

Please.. It's only human to make mistakes and I really find it utterly childish for people to pick on others. Heck, even teachers do make mistakes sometimes. That doesn't mean that they are not qualified to teach, right? I've friends that major in English studies and still inept in speaking excellent English. Does that mean they are not worthy of the degree and can't teach the subject?

Please don't belittle people and throw scornful remarks that serve no purpose than to invoke anger on others. I guess what goes around comes around. Make the thread a useful place to share career opinions constructively. Not stereotypically degrades others. You obviously wouldn't want people to pick on you for your own shortcomings, right? It pretty darn shallow..

My answer is YES to this qn.

Anyway, sorry to teachers or would-be-teachers of my kids.

If you have what it takes, teach. Moulding the nation.

So I see.. In that case, I would suggest that you don't send your kids to our secular schools because you are in a wayyyyyy better position to teach your kids. Don't even employ tutors too yeah? Because they are all brought up and taught in secular schools and university, which apparently might be a little low in status to a person such as yourself.. A Self-sufficient family living couped up, denying the truths about the world outside.. :thumb:

oh yeah tangolima.. while ure at it, maybe you can walk up to MOE and tell them to lay off all those China-born lecturers, who have a little bit of language problems and inability to deliver excellent vocab in their lecture speeches. I guess that way, you can still send you kids to our secular schools! :)

teachers do make mistakes but that doesn't mean that they can't teach. knowing the diff between principle and principal is a HUGE mistake to a english teacher but nothing to a math teacher. unless mistake was made by a ENGLISH teacher, otherwise i agree to ur above statement.

i have a fair share of international lecturers in my uni. chinese, irish and indian. you name it i have attended their lecutures. however i have yet to see one make a fundamental error. For example, for accounts, can't tell the diff from debit and credit. Engineering, can't tell the diff from a filtered unfiltered signal. the list goes on.

tangolima probably shldn't laugh at our poor teacher here... we are humans... we make mistakes... shame on u tangolima... but... i think he corrected out of good will... not trying to put her down... cheers...:)

Hi

While your friends who majored in English hv poor command of English, they do not speak for the whole lot of excellent teachers we have in SG. Pls understand this point of contention. You, having lousy friends, do not mean that whole of SG is lousy.

Major in English, but poor in English is ok? Then.. we have one who major in Maths, but poor in Maths? How is that ok by any sensible measure?

I will still send my kids to secular schools here. But since u said ur friends are not good, perhaps can list the schools that they are at. I will make a mental note of it.

Hi

I am ok with china-born lecturers who teach physics, chemistry, maths etc. But not english.

And im darn sure i do not wish my kids to learn that the head of a school is a PRINCIPLE. And not PRINCIPAL.

Typo error? Doubt so.

In any case... you are a teacher?

Wow this thread is pretty heated up. I think some people here need to be aware that there are English Language majors and English Literature majors. I'm an English Language major and I'm not afraid to say that what I learn in university cannot be applied to Primary - JC level. What we learn is the derivation of the language and the analysis behind it. We do not correct people, but we observe and take down data. Social-scientists you could say. After all, when enough people say the wrong thing, it becomes the right thing. Singapore's so-called standard English has deviations with regards to syntax. There are many types of world Englishes.

English teachers are more prescriptive. In comparison with doctors, what they do is prescribe the grammar to the school kids. Ever asked your teacher why the determiner the is always in front of the noun and why it can be preceded by adjectives? Such concepts are too abstract for kids to handle, so teachers have to use lay man terms or simply shrug it aside and tell the kid to accept the fact. I'm still wondering why generative linguistics has logician tables and mathematical functions. Perhaps humans have tried too much to analysis cognitive patterns.

Anyway, in my opinion I feel that kids should develop a strong command of spoken English rather than written English, at an early age. Having a foundation in spoken English gives the kid a headstart in school. Many parents neglect phonetics, which is sad. I believe that proper phonetics and phonology is not taught in school? At least I wasn't taught that in school. I too worry for my kids in future, if my kid's English teacher majored in Economics or business. Would they know the finer points of language? I honestly hope they prove me wrong.

*p.s. In case anyone attacks my "English", I'm is a cliticization of I am*

heh  peace

i don't know the answer to your question, but i can make it even more off topic.

gift are basically things you give to other at no charge, then why is it always call free gift? doesn't it make the "free" redundant?

In what context did your teacher use the word lesser?

Lesser can exist as either an adverb or adjective.

Adverb - lesser-known person

Adjective - smaller, as in size or importance; inferior: a lesser evil.

Can be used as a comparative of little or with least as a superlative.

Eg, A lesser evil.

All the info was cut and pasted from an online dictionary.

I don't know the answer either, but what I can say is that the semantics of free as a noun changes when you combine the two morphemes free and gift to form a noun phrase free gift.
