The reason why some clutch in when starting is because to lessen the bruden of the starter motor when starting. Most bikes are using constant-mesh gearbox. Read here for more info,(under synchronize transmission)

Anyway from what I've notice, most or all of the EFI bikes need to do that. I guess it is a safty feature for the bike. Its the same like the side stand for Class 2A and 2 where the engine will die off if the sidestand is still on the ground and the gear engaged. Can someone correct me if I am wrong?

interesting, but i don't see how the holding the clutch in is any different from starting in neutral, after all, nothing is engaged in both instances. could you explain more in detail regarding the burden of the starter motor? i read the paragraph 2 times but my stupid brain still cannot comprehend :cheeky:

The difference between starting with clutch in and clutch out is that when clutch out, the engine has to move the other half of the clutch, as well as half of the "gearbox". In heavy vehicles (Class 4+), this difference is quite huge. I assume that is the same with Class 2 bikes as well.

Definitely safety. I always blur blur never check what gear I am in when starting the bike.

Is this the same as starting in neutral. When I start the bike, I check that my neutral light is on first before cranking the motor. Is there a need to clutch in as well. I'm riding cl2B btw.

I used to be a car person. Then one day, I woke up and became a biker.

Ex rides:

Nissan Sunny 1.6

Nissan Cefiro 2.0

Honda CBR 150 R

Honda CBR 400 RR Fireblade

Current rides:

Yamaha 2008 YZF-R1

KIA Cerato Forte 1.6 Well OK sometimes a car comes in handy.

It is open to debate. As long as the gear spindle assy is free from the engagement rod,I do not see the reason to 'clutch in'.

Very hard to explain to you bro. Must open up gearbox and show you. :cheeky: Anyway different manufacturers have different design in gearbox so clutching in when starting might not work or will work in some gearbox. On most bikes the flywheel is connected to the main gear shaft and power is connected or disconnected by the clutch system, when the operator starts the bike without clutching in,the starter motor needs to turn the flywheel + main gear shaft. Clutching in lessen the burden of the stater motor as only the flywheel is only be turned. :)

Agreed. It is more of a precaution unless the vehicle requires clutching in before ignition.

As above, this acts as a safety precaution. Haha... no need for any technical explanation (though I learned something new from it :) ). Auto transmission motorcycles (ie. Gilera Runners, X8, X9, etc) are not equipped with clutch levers so as a precaution the brake needs to be applied during start-up to prevent the bike from jerking forward.

ok, I can't find the old thread but from what I remember, it's only for wet clutch that needs to clutch in so that the engine oil can lube the clutch cable. Something like that.
