I used to drool at the big bikes when I got a small bike. Then I saved like hell and bought a few big bikes one after another.. a 600, two 750s, and lastly a CBR1000RR.

Ya, its nice to own big bikes... feel like a king on the road. Enjoy the envious stares etc and it can quite a chick magnet too.

I guess I make enough money to be able to buy any of the bikes available in the market today...yet the DRZ400SM is the best bike I have ever owned.. up till today. Simply because it serves my needs very well... both as a track bike and a daily transport bike.

In the end... it really boils down to Needs versus Wants which can sometimes drive people to over commit financially. If you have to drastically change you current lifestyle to own the bike... you are over committing financially. I will never allow that to happen. You need to ask yourself.... do you need that bike or do you just want that bike.

Good luck on your decisions and bike hunt. :thumb:

You are so fortunate to be able "make enough money to be able to buy any of the bikes available in the market today".. Good for u! :thumb:

I wish I would be able to go down the same road as you did. Hmm.. Regarding the Needs vs Wants......

Well, that's a definitely a tough decision to make. I believe nobody in SG would really need a big bike. Even for touring, or going to track, I believe that it is also a 'want' too.. Nobody really needs to go to track or go to Genting on a monthly basis.. BUT to each his own. I may be wrong here.. :cheeky:

I dunno.. Definitely the lure of it is really tempting. But then when i see those lao jiaos at the checkpoint pushing the bike with their feet during traffic jams, I'm really glad my bike is only a S4. Cant imagine what it's like for a 60kg guy like me to push/straddle a busa. Good god. :giddy:

"to each their own" is never wrong... that's the fundamental towards democracy and freedom of choice

life is about balancing needs and wants... without wants, a society wouldn't prosper financially as quickly becoz its people would be easily satisfied with only needs. too much wants, the society becomes too materialistic and gets entrenched in desires :faint:

to want is human :cheeky:

do we need condominiums when we can also live comfortably in a hdb? do we need a bmw when a toyota would be just fine? do we need to dine at posh restaurants when hawker food could keep us from hunger as well? do we need a busa when a S4 could be more than sufficient? :p

but imagine if our society were to develop a "need will do" culture and stop wanting more, our govt would have another big headache of getting us (the only "natural" resource) to work harder for higher economic growth, in addition to the problem of getting us to work harder in the bedroom. we're not producing enough natural resources, and i'm equally guilty for that... hahahaha

there are many people who track/tour every weekends.

if the weekend is slightly longer, they even go up to thailand.

That's why I said, I may be wrong. Haha.. Ok nevermind. Care to share the financial status of those 'many people'? Who knows, if I can support the same lifestyle as the Big Bros up there.. Emm.. Not EXACTLY the same, but something similar. Cos I really look up to those 'abang-abang.' :cheeky:

I think owning a bigger Class 2 bike (900cc+) is similar to owning a small car.

Expect to burn 1k+++ every month on installment, petrol, maintenance and parking.

So take your pick: An R1 or a Perodua Kancil.

Only one cost stays the same. Parking for 1000cc and 50cc is the price:D

bro i dun think so.

not every month 1k. that one like owning a car better than kancil.

a litre bike is still cheaper. about 600 p/m? depends the price of the bike.

Buy 4d toto..pray u tio.. haha :p

ya.maybe bike installment is same as car(for some) , but bike mostly no nid pay parkin , ERP cheaper alot etc ... really save alot total.

True. Car parking is $80-$90 per month at home, and another $80-$300 per month at work, depending on where you are. So bike will have to minus this cost. Road tax, ERP, and petrol cost.

$30k car vs. $30k bike I think will be a difference of $300-$400 a month. My earlier calculation not correct:D

i was having abt 1.8k gross when i got my gsxr600. cost me $18k. downpayment 5k, installments per mth $320. after taking out installment, bills, home maintenance, it's still pretty comfortable for me

personally, a guideline that i use for myself, is that the money spend on a vehicle should not be more than 1/3 of my pay. here is how i calculate mine:

per month: installments($320) + petrol($160) + season parking($13)

per 3 mth: routine servicing($100) -> this is a rough gauge

works out to be abt $520 per mth, which is still within the 1/3 rule

I did not factor in insurance and road tax, because i had planned the purchase of my bike in a way that it will coincide with the time i get my bonus.

I think for TS, good planning will help if he really wants to get a class 2 bike.

It helps to have a spreadsheet out detailing your expenses for the month so you know how much you can commit per month.

Its not just maintenance, petrol & installments.

There will also be the irresistable temptation of mods, accessories and apparels.

Always.

So its always good to plan so you know where you stand and where you don't.
