Dear all,

Would like to know how bad are vibrations even with a RAM mount? Or that RAM mounts have nothing to do with vibrations? Appreciate the info for this RAM noob.

Cheers

ram mount has done rockwell vibration tests with results posted on their site.

in actual use, even at highly illegal speeds, reading from the gps is no issue.

maybe some V twin riders can feedback.

Hi everyone,

I've been thinking of getting a GPS unit for my bike, and I'm keen to get Garmin GPS 60CXs. I've checked with JK but they don't that model. Does anyone know where else I can buy it, and what is the price like?

I also saw some for sale online and on Ebay, and prices are quite attractive. If I buy from overseas, can I load Spore and Malaysian maps onto it?

Hope to get some help...GPS newbie here :)

Thanks in advance

p.s. if anyone is selling their 60CXs, do let me know too :)

why you are keen on 60csx ? it's discontinue model. New one 62csx has been launched, that's why 60csx are selling lower.

check out oregon models... good price, use AA battery and handheld as well..

btw... you are using GPS for bike right ? i'll suggest Nuvi 500, water-proof, good chipset, also can use on car.

JK's package is quite attractive and good price.

EAsier to use nuvi while riding as it is touch screen compared to 60csx, which are normal buttons.

ram-mount balls are rubber coated. so it can stand vibrations... but i havent seen thumping harley with ram-mount and GPS before.

(i think they are afraid of GPS may destroy the halfcap and leather vest image)

ram-mount's strength and quality is really good.

i've dropped my bike a few times with GPS attached.. it holds well.

tried my GPS ram-mount on my scrambler WR200 for camera, bumps and drops, no problem.

even extreme rider "Walter Colebatch" used ram-mount mirrors on BMW X-challange for Russia Siberia ride.

Looking at the design, the RamMount does not absorb any vibration as all the parts are tightly clamped into each other. It is very difficult to design a shock mount, especially for a light load like a GPS.

Not sure what device you intend to mount but, from my experience, I can assure you any gps will survive on any bike in any condition because they have absolutely no moving parts. I am confident if you subject any Garmin GPS to the MIL MIL-STD-810E testing, they will pass with flying colours.

Just make sure it is explicitly 60CSX, not a character short. The 60CSX does not come with pre-loaded map, so you have to load your own map, and you will need a microSD card to store the map.

Once you get the device, they come back here for map loading instructions.

Officially, the 60CSx is not a discontinued model

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=167

The 60CSX is still the preferred handheld gps, especially among the mappers because it has proven to be rugged, precise, and reliable. Garmin tried very hard to kill this model with newer generation models such as the Colorado and Oregon, but the 60CSx refuses to die.

Garmin is notoriously known for buggy software in their new models, so if you get the 62 now, be prepared for some issues. Garmin will fix it eventually but it will take time. If they can't, they will kill it like what they did to Colorado.

Another reason for not jumping into it is the price. Feature wise, the 62S is the closest to the 60CSx. If you check AMAZON, for the price of one 62S you can buy almost two 60CSX. It may not be a fair comparison since technologically the 62 is definitely more superior but how many user will know the difference ?

If you need more waypoints, more routings more track logs capacity, built-in tidal almanac, NEMA interface, then the 62S is the correct model for you.

Thanks for advice, appreciate it! Yes, I'm using it for bike.

The reason I was thinking of 60Csx is because its smaller, looks more rugged and it uses AA batteries. Nuvi 500 looks good too, and I'm also considering it but the only thing I don't like about it is that it uses rechargeable battery.

Just checked the price for 60CSx from the eastgear website. Wow, the price is quite close to Nuvi 500. I thought 60CSx will be much cheaper...:(

Nuvi 500, and the 60CSx serve different purpose so it it quite meaningless to rate them simply on it's price.

Eastgear is not the cheapest place to buy GPS, especially Garmin GPS. If you walk around Sim Lim Tower, you can definitely get it cheaper. However if you want a really good deal, buy from Amazon, and ship it back by vpost or borderlinx, I estimate, it will cost you no more than $320.

Thanks a lot for the lead. So likewise if I buy Nuvi 500 from overseas, I can also use it in Singapore, and load local and Malaysian maps with no problems?

Just saw this on eBay - Nuvi 295W, about USD$120 buy in now, new.

i would stand by the quality of the metal bits but not the plastic ones.

a couple of broken under normal use after a year but local dealer did an exchange no questions asked

It's selling for USD79 on Amazon, down from the original price of USD270, when it was launched mid 2010.

The 295W was doomed to fail because any smart phone would have make this device redundant. Especially now garmin has just launched it's App for Iphone.
