Road markings

I realised that the bike slipped when I applied more brake though I was already tapping my brakes beforehand because I noticed I wasn't slowing down enough, definately no time to react. The part of me that was sliding on the marking suffered little to no abrasions, the part of me dragging on the tarmac was blood and lacerations on my limbs. Bad thing was, I was wearing clogs and bermudas, my right clog tore through and dragged all the way up to my knee.

 

minimum PPE for riding, long pants, impt man. but its ok, lesson learnt and now you've gained some experience and the others here can learn from it too. glad you and your wife are safe now. i just hope this doesnt deter you from practicing safe riding though. i believe all things come with risk and its up to us to assess it and mitigate it accordingly.

also alot of rider forget to slow down while riding in traffic light area. when the light turn amber, they find it is impossible to brake as normal. either skip due to over braking or end up in the middle of a traffic junction.

 

personally i feel beating the ambre light is a dangerous habit. you never know when another road user rush out at the first sign of green light or even just before turning green which a lot of rider enjoy doing at the other end.

Very Nice note on it.. even though its logical to slow down.. a lot of us sometimes speed up..must admit I sometimes try to beat the light.. gonna change the habit.. I also realize a lot of impatient road users (mostly riders and taxi drivers) who move off 2 secs before the light turns green...

Those who jostle for position squeezing all the way up to the yellow box are always the slowest to accelerate off. Lame.

Basically, slow down and take your cornering carefully on rainy days when you approach these:

 

1. Lane Markings/ White Arrows (Rain + White Arrow near Traffic Light + Speed = Sh*t happens)

2. Manhole covers (Some of these are located right in the centre of bends)

3. School Zone (Red bricks denote the zone, be careful when it's raining)

4. Bus zone (The huge yellow zone is probably not as grippy as other areas)

5. Metal Plates (Construction area covers, these are the worst.)

6. Multi-storey Carparks (Many of these carparks have floors which are ok in the dry, when it is wet, offers minimal traction especially to motorcycles. Be very careful when going up and down the carpark.)

7. Metal drain grilles (When crossing over these covers, be careful. Zero traction.)

 

Some years back, there was a fatal accident at one of the bends which I frequently used. Right in the centre is a manhole cover and it will not take much speed or lean for a motorcycle to lose a front/ rear.

Some road design probably do not feature motorcycles as a consideration. I mean manhole cover, right in the centre of a bend? hmm....

 

1 incident a few weeks back - I was at the rain shelter at the Expressway when I saw this rider riding in towards the shelter. Speed is very slow and when he guide his bike towards the left entry path, the tyres crossed the white lines and down he went.

As I said, his speed is already slow, but the tyres lost traction over the white lines as he guided the bike in.

 

Just be careful when it rains.

Those bus lane markings are terrible. For some reason there seems to be a seam in the Tarmac as well, which makes it bumpy when you go over the marking.

As for attire part, night work requires berms and slippers, very cumbersome to bring both plus its dirty work. Other than that I wear long sleeves, pants and shoes. Enough of it.

Just a head's up to you guys out there, be careful when you're riding along Woodlands Road at the side of the ex. Ten Mile Junction.

There's gunna be a road diversion tonight. With the new road, please look out for a series of drain gratings and manhole covers. It lies on the left lane (on a 2 lane road) and in the direction of vehicle flow.

With such gratings, it's common to have depressions near the covers to aid rainwater runoff. The drain covers will start after the junction (between TMJ/Choa Chu kang/Woodlands Rd/Bukit Panjang Rd). There is an estimated 7-8 gratings and covers.

 

Hence, be very careful when you are travelling along Woodlands Road, and more so if it's raining. Such stuff are slippery.
