Drive a bigger car? You may need a new licence

•

Drivers may soon need a different licence to get behind the wheel of a bigger, more powerful car. Drivers may soon need a different licence to get behind the wheel of a bigger, more powerful car.

The proposed changes, which may be modelled after the system for motorcyclists, whereby riders chalk up experience on smaller bikes before moving on to bigger ones, are believed to be part of a wider review on driving licences.

While it is too early to tell how the changes may affect drivers, one industry body backing such changes said on Monday that it was 'a timely move' as the issue of motorists' behaviour has been a hot topic since a fatal accident involving a Ferrari and ComfortDelGro taxi on May12.

A police spokesman confirmed on Monday that a review on driving licences was ongoing but was 'unable to share more details at this stage'.

Clearing each stage at SSDC and BBDC for bike license was fun !!!

They will probably go the way of separating super cars.

Think about it. Having different classes of car licences may not be such a good idea. With cars costing an arm and a leg, how many young drivers and families will be able to get a small cc car, drive a while, then upgrade to a bigger car?

You will end up with many young drivers NOT driving for a few years after getting their licence, then suddenly getting behind the wheel of daddy's Merc/SUV/MPV when the time comes. Is this safe?

Past: KDX200, LC4 400, LC4 620, GSXR750WR

Present: CBR900RRY, Gas Gas EC250, XR250L, XR250RV, XR400 (motard-ed), NX650 Dominator

The adjustment in law makes sense although it is late in coming.

2nd post also makes a lot of sense except for drivers who will stick to small cars like me. So yes, the new rules may in fact create more dangers on the road. Then again, if the law does not change, currently new young drivers once getting license will immediately drive their daddy's Merc/SUV/MPV which is still unsafe... Although there is a difference since their TP lessons r still fresh.

So by changing the laws, example first car class is 3B (Copy bikes). 1 year later learn 3A then another year for 3. In relation to bikes classes, after riding 2B for 1 year, we form our habits, etc. But going back to take 2A, we actually need to force ourselves to adher to the strict rules tat the testers follows. If following the same principle, the young drivers even if they do not drive "3B" for a year, when they go back to take "3A", they will still need to follow the TP rules.

After which if they drive their daddy's Merc/SUV/MPV, it is of not much difference as compared to now get cls 3 and drive their daddy's Merc/SUV/MPV. I just hope tat if the law changes, getting "3A" won't be just a simple conversion or upgrading. Rather it should be strigent like 2B/2A/2

I hope these new measures are not knee jerk reaction to the recent Ferrari-taxi tragedy because the Ferrari driver was 31 yo and was living here for 4 years so whatever new measures had been implemented, they wouldn't have prevented this horrific accident.

Everything can remain status quo, only change required is the attitide of the driver behind these high performance cars.

Our policy makers seem to only have one solution to all their problems. First they segregated the motorbike license, then Maritime Port Authority introduced a separate license for boats bigger than 24m, now they want new category of license for cars.

Personally, i support having different classes of Class 3 but as a reactive measure over a single incident, that's just wayang show by the Bureaucrats.

what's new? always the same pattern, knee-jerk reactive measure only after the **** hits the fan..

as well fix a speed limit device that goes beep beep beep when above 90. a blinker light on roof top just like lorry is pretty too:cheeky:

our goverment work on the principle 手痛砍手 脚痛砍脚. just hope one doesn't get 头痛o_O

in the end, it hit a jackpot for them since more class equal to more revenue for the pay and pay goverment.

I hope this never happens. Knee-jerk reaction and I don't find why it should be funny for car drivers especially for people who have both licenses. We all choose our own form of transport.. The tiered motorcycle system over here is troublesome as it is so why would I want to support more license segregation? Why want to complicate simple things further?

is this a knee jerk reaction to the ferarri incident? or it could be one of their money making measures again.

anyway, for foreigners to convert their foreign license to Singapore license, all they have to do is to take BTT right? isn't that a bit too easy?

come to think of it, what if those foreigners actually 'brought' their license back in their hometown? maybe the authorities might want to review the conversion process.

i personally think that the problem lies with the attitudes of drivers. Majority of them have the "I am protected by metal, come bang me if you dare" mentality. This mentality will never change even if our government decides to segregate the class 3 license.

I dont think it will happen. because when it is brought in parliament, as you know it many of them in there drive big , big cars and of course they want their children to drive or relatives so if you this, it will be awhile before they can drive. so NO , they will say. They will say its not the LAW or the power of the cars but the attitude of the drivers

Do you think that this scheme is all about letting drivers build up their skills and be more safe behind the wheels? We know that the gahmen is always looking for ways to implement money making policies to suck us dry. By coming up with this, the nation's coffer will sure surplus tremendously thru various revenues.

Insurance companies and driving schools may be laughing all the way to the bank. But in the end, who had the biggest laugh? Who will be crying when yet another FT, unfamiliar with our road culture, killed a Singaporean?

Back in the 80's and early 90's, local drivers and riders(even Malaysian), no matter how disagreed with each other, still maintains a harmonious vibe.

But wth is happening to our island now?!

I concur. I remember an incident when a car suddenly decided to swerve in the lane I am at without neither checking nor signalling. Upon seeing that I pressed my then loud horn and saw the car actually wobbled trying to swerve back in its lane. The driver then checked the mirrors and upon seeing me riding a bike the driver just swerved again into the lane I was on without signalling.

It also happens to many old uncles and aunties who pass their license years ago and started driving a merc or BMW their son/daughter bought them or from their CPF money. This is happening CURRENTLY. Mind you, many of them drove into the drains, into ppl house etc.

On the other hand, since there will be stages for car license, how many people are able to take 3B, 3A and 3 , assume this is the tier class system? Perhaps, by the time they get Class 3, they are more matured when they first got 3B. How about that as counter argument.

Lack of practical experiences causes all these. Somehow, i'm glad that SG have spacious drains and beautiful private houses for them to target.

And yes, people will be more mature as they progressed thru the tiers. But given the high cost of ownership, coe, road tax, erp and season parking. How many are able to buy a 1st tier car, drive it for a year, sell it upon passing 3A, buy a 2nd tier car, drive for a year, sell again after getting their cls3 and lastly buy that last tier bloody expensive car? That will be damned painful to their finances.

On paper it sounds logical but the real logic hits you when its your time to go thru the licenses.

Imo, coe doesn't stands for Certificate of Entitlement. More appropriately, it should Certificate of Enjoyment. Enjoy what you say? Well, enjoy paying for a piece paper that lets you experience the enjoyment of paying nonstop for the next 10 years.

maybe they will spilt it as anything more then 2.5cc is deemed super cars except mpv or suv??
