when we are comparing the width of the tyres, we have to assume all other things being equal.

 

that means we assume the compound is the same, the wider tyre will have a bigger contact patch which equates to more grip.

 

You are missing one crucial part of the equation. Rim width. Fitting fatter tires on rims that are too narrow actually decreases contact patch.

y the topic change to rim? TS's qtn is 'Izit true that thicker tyres are safer?'.

i dun tink so tt he mention he's gonna fix a oversize tyre on the stock rims etc.

 

You cannot discuss contact patch without taking rim size into consideration, because of the simple fact that a tire needs to be mounted onto a rim before usage....

 

And different combinations of rim sizes and tire widths give different contact patch sizes...

overheard from a mech in jb saying that wider tyres than ur stock will wear out ur sprockets faster. is it true?

also heard from a m'sian fren that long distance riding with sotong tyres is a no no, wear and tear faster. i dunno if its true or not lah, just sharing what i heard. :D

i second that. plane tyres are made tough to withstand friction produced from take off and landings. i presumed 'tough' should have more carbon in it which affects grip.

Friction from landing rolls I can understand.

 

But friction from take off runs?? Before you mislead everyone here... could you explain this theory further?

Sotong tyres are those really really thin tyres that some 2b bikes use.

 

 

And i have no idea about the tire tread and its details, he just said that tires and sprockets will wear out faster.

this quote may hold some truth in it, as the weight of the rider and bike is spread over a smaller surface area on the tyre.

"If you reduce the tyre friction you risk slipping. Tyres are designed to offer as much friction with the surface as possible. Wheel bearings are designed to have as little friction as possible. To take an extreme example: if tyre friction was zero, you'd have no traction on the runway, therefore no directional stability if there was even the slightest camber on the taxiway/runway and your brakes wouldn't do anything either. If the wheel bearing friction is too high, on the other hand, you'll need more thrust to get moving."
