Dunno, makes some noise for a while like it is pumping some petrol around. Dealership always says to wait for the little red engine light to go off before starting. Makes no sence though how many people with fuel injected cars do you know that wait for a while half way during turning the ignition key? I wonder if other fuel injected bikes are the same.

Hi Hagar, i always wait for the little red/orange light of my car to go off after the first/second turn before i actually start up the engine and the car start up beautifully. Not sure if that applies for bikes.... :thumb:

Really. Ha my car is fuel injected I always just turn the key and go. Maybe I should have read the instruction manual :( . Seems ok so far though:) .

Mine was a Mitsubishi and that was what the dealer told me to do for start ups. Maybe you should give it a try tonight or when you next need to use your car, to wait for the light to go off, and see if there's any difference. Cheers. :thumb:

i think the vehicle system sweeps thru the entire circuit and make sure all sensors etc etc are working..i tried once to start a busa before the sweep ends and the bike refuses to start, got to off it, wait awhile, switch on again and let the entire sweeping cycle ends before it got started..did gives the owner a scare though..:cheeky:

apparently on EFI systems the whining sound you hear when you first turn the key is the fuel pump priming the system, and the red light goes off after it's done. if you start the bike immediately after turning the key you get this gurgling sound, quite scary... i wait for the light to go off, whether on my jap or harley EFI bikes.

so i guess there aint a hard and fast rule that one must wait for the whinning sound / engine light to go off before starting, it just a recommendation by the manufacturer that we do wait for it to be over before starting...just in case of complications?

But i believe most of us all have the Singaporean Kia See Syndrome. Especially if it's a new bike / car, and am unsure, so just follow what the manufacturer says lor.

i think its just a habit.. just like how some ppl like to throttle once when they start their bike... or throttle once before they off their bike :thumb:
Other than this act being a habit for some, some also quoted that it just to prime the carb. :)

Hi adammikhail,

But by having this habit of reving prior to engine startup, does it cause the bike any harm in the long run? Let's say if my bike has no problem starting up in the morning without this action.

----------

its normal for harleys whihc runs on carb.prime the carb two to three throttles, then pull throttle and start the bike.

understand that some of my fellow riders even ride with the choke till a few mins before the put it back to off posn.otherwise, engine will die on you ;(

totally different from japanese bike...nothing to worry...

wats e reason behind it?

if not many future HD owners will onli think e engine is faulty...

Something about carbs will empty itself when standing still. Why jap ones don't I dunno. I go ask my mechanic

actually jap ones also have this issue leh... remember riding my jap carb bike... also needa do the same thing... :)

Hi guys,

Just went for my self prac yesterday, test date drawing nearer. Damn shiok man, rev the fazer. Heard that if never go for self prac, sure fail. Go to little, also fail. How may times is considered "enough". The last time i took my last test was about 13 years ago, so can't really remember how many times i went. But go too many times, alot of $$$$ spend leh :faint:

Correct me if i'm wrong cos i am no Mechanic but the only true reason i can think of relating to this is with the air-fuel ratio which is what carburators are about.

Riding with choke on is something i would certainly not do.

So at the end of the day perhaps some bikes are tuned to be very rich while others very lean.

Bikes which run on carbs also may backfire becos of these reasons.

When carbs are flooded, they would slowly empty themselves, be it Jap or American or whatever.....

If carbs are flooded, bike cannot start becos air-fuel mixture is too rich

If you ride you bike with choke on too long you'll damage it over the long run.

With carbs , it's all about air fuel ratio

How do you start yours? Is yours EFI? Normal procedure, twist thrice, pull half choke, ride for about 2-3 mins or a few hundred metres, close choke. No farts. You'll see a difference specially at night at cold places like highlands area in Malaysia or Bukit Timah, Lim Chu Kang those kinda places and even more so if you haven't rode your bike for 3-5 days.

If EFI, on and start. :p

Again, the reason is due to the air-fuel mixture, in cold places and highlands , the oxygen content in the air is different from normal places.

Folks who lived in countries which experience different seasons will understand this better.

This is the reason for the invention and mass usage of EFI which measures and control the air-fuel ratio to the manufacturing optimal making it more stable. you cant play with it mechanically like a carb but you can play with it electronically.

Many cars (including my previous) are "super chipped" to give better performance through controlling various aspects of the Fuel injection.

i think as long as you can control the machine well and obey traffic rules during test, u will pass! :thumb:

as wat friedfishz mention he didn't even go for self prac.
