yeah, it was the spark plug causing most of the problem, i hope nothing else comes up.

anyway, with regards to washing carb, you can get it done but make sure the mechanic knows how to set the idle properly and correctly. if not, you will do quite abit of damage.

i learnt my lesson the hard way, never gonna mess with idle screw until i more pro. last time gey kiang think i can solve it. end up screwed the bike even further.

any brake fluid to recomend? can get where also.

brake fluid is quite universal... any dot 3 or dot 4 would be fine. you can get them anywhere be is carrefour, giant, motorcycle workshops... et cetera...

nah.. i knw... cux the shop i frequent does charge abit more than usual, but i like their honest business style.. fixed pricings.. n the mechanics are really meticulous wif their work.. he even clean up the inside of my calipers and adjusted the piston..

i changed my front ones at a certain POPULAR workshop in tohguan.. n end up, my brakes squeeked for like several weeks.. probably they didnt clean up d brake dust build-up inside b4 putting in d new pads..

i've seen my friend's phantom the tank is almost full, battery is ok, but engine stalled suddenly and luckily he managed to push start for quite some time to go...

is it because of the starter problem anyone knows?

could be the cam chain tensioner. get it checked, the cam chain tensioner is one of the failing points of the phantom.

ok, i'm gonna post a breakdown of the problems i'm having with my phantom. i rode it to my parent's place in malaysia (they were hella pissed.) then when i was to ride back the next day, the problem started. now i can't even throw it to a workshop in sg unless i wanna tow it from malaysia.

starts out fine in the morning, or after a long period of not riding, engine will idle as normal.

after riding for like 100-300 meters, the engine will die off on its own. idling will be very erratic, high then low high then low.

everytime i turn the throttle, the engine chokes and sounds like its dying.

i checked the air filter, its ok, the spark plug is totally black on top (carbon fouling)

replace the new one, after riding for 100-300 meters as above, carbon fouled again.

tried idling and adjust the carb, doesnt help at all. i've just sent the bike to wash the carb, change air filter and full service. and then this happened. my trip down to malaysia was fine, nothing wrong at all. overnight, the problems started.

what the hell is happening man? anyone? i've spent so much on this bike but i've barely got any riding miles out of it. seems like more trouble than its worth. i like to know what's exactly wrong with me before i have to tow it all the way from malaysia to sg as a last resort (can't trust the skills of mechs in malaysia)

coming from engine or exhaust?

exhaust = contraction

engine = tensioner

wen u press the starter button, does it have a tick at the Right-hand-side chrome cover.. if it does, means either ur starter relay or ur starter carbon.. less than $100 lar...

Haiz. My ta200 really keep coming up with new problems every week.

I fixed by speedo and rear brake signal relay 3 weeks ago, then roughly 2 weeks ago, my battery started to run flat every few days.

went to the my mech 5 times in 2 weeks alr.

1st time to change new battery. 2nd to 5th time go there charge battery. But the longest the battery ever lasted was 3days. shortest is 2 days before battery become flat again. totally flat, that you don't even see the neutral indicator light when you switch on the ignition.

He tested with multimeter, and told me that there's nothing wrong with the rectifier.

Den each time i go see him he also never charge me for anything, i also go until paiseh.

anyone ever have this problem before?

That is seriously a bad battery life. Something must be draining the current somewhere. Or the bike's charging circuit got problem.

Normal phantom battery can last more than a year (or 2, 3...) without maintenence provided it has a stock electrical system (no foglights, alarm, etc).

my mech say charging no prob leh. he's suspecting that the iu is eating up all the power when bike is not in use, so he disconnected the IU from the battery.

has been 2 days since IU disconnected, so far so good.

good it be the IU?

If not, he suggest have to change wiring. :(

damn scary leh....this morning i ride until MBS the erp there.... den when exiting the expressway the bike like losing power...den pop,pop,pop....engine die while im on the move..i tot no fuel den change to reserve....but impossible leh i only pump 3~4 days ago, only travel 120km.

i park 1 side, and tried to start...but only hear tick tiak sound....den i put throttle, and start, still cant start den exhaust 1 pop sound.

then i wait awhile, try again e start, den the neutral light was flickering......

so is it spark plug spoil or electrical system got fault?

Anyone can help a newbie with this...?

Posted (edited)

That one better ask yr friend at Planet (the other ah chong). sounds like ignition problem leh. Call planet see how much they charge for tow.

yeah.. thr is definitely sumting wrong wif ur charging circuit.. mine even wif ALOT of LEDS.. and running signal lights and pilot lights.. wen idling, my voltage sumtyms drop below 12V..

Is normal. This bike does not generate enough power to charge the battery at idle. So to save power I turn off headlamp when stationary for long periods of time at traffic lights. Just remember to turn it back on when moving.

This ensures my battery discharge rate is kept minimal (battery use when starting only).

Question: Will the type of EO I use affect my fc?

Thanks in advance

Effect depends on a lot of things besides the EO.

Short answer - no, don't expect any fuel economy gains by changing engine oil, unless in drastic examples where, for instance, bike is running on no oil or never changed the oil.

Theoretically, a lighter engine oil (40 weight) will marginally reduce pumping drag leading to better economy. However, due to the Phantom's relatively high revs and high temperature during highway running, from experience 50 weight is better. (i.e., 10W50)

Synthetic EOs also have higher flow rate and better heat dissipation properties = theoretically less thermal stress on the engine = higher efficiency.

Using synethetic EO also means no need to overfill oil sump to compensate for oil consumption due to high temperatures (as synthetic has much higher heat and shear resistance) leading again to lower pumping drag and a higher efficiency engine.

Maybe that's why my FC is always very good. Can buy more pillows :3

Bottom line is no one can decide which EO is best for your bike, and optimisation like which brand of EO, well it's up to the individual's budget.

Just don't try to use like, 0W20 to save fuel like in hybrid cars because there is less pumping drag. That's an example of how optimisation of fuel economy affects the level of engine protection, and in this example, fatally for a bike.

Optimal would be a 10W40 full synthetic but the Phantom likes 50 weight oil -a lot-, from personal observation. Plus, it's $16 only :3

Oh cool, thanks a lot Pandora =) Appreciate your detailed answer
