Yamaha YBR125 (Monthly)

Monthly Installments: $0

Road Tax & Insurance: $34.50

Parking: $0

Petrol: $40

Maintenance (EO & Sparkplug): $4

Total Cost per month: $78.50

NB:

1. This calculation is a typical schooling month. 4 months in a year i do not go to school so theoretically, i spend only $20 on petrol, so if a average it out, i only spend about $71.

So expensive la sia!!!

If i take bus to school and back per month: $28.80

NB: Extra trips on the bike are NOT INCLUDED in the bus calculation above.

-------

48hrs travelling time on bike vs 120hrs traveling time in bus. Traveling time reduced by 60%. For me, it is worth the $50 spent extra per month.

Yes. TIME IS MONEY TOO. dont forget. :)

for me,

Vtec 1

Fully paid

Parking: $15/m

Petrol: $35/3 week

Maint: $150-$220/ 6 month

Road Tax: $120/y

Insurance: $450/y

Per Month: Less than $100

still a NSF, hence the amount of $ spent on petrol is low. only $450 per month of salary for me and i still can save abit. power. but the amount of time i save is alot. im a stay in personnel @ gedong camp. everybody knows gedong camp only 1 bus go in, 975. super time consuming if take public transport. so i save alot of time booking in n out. gonna ORD soon. after which will be more. will update after ORD :)

The $50 is what I call the cost of convenience. I'm glad that it worked for you.

TDM 900

parking = zero

petrol = $60pm

maintenance = $100pa or about $8pm (oil change every 10,000km)

total per month = $100

DRZ 400 E

I'm still wondering how come your TDM is cheaper to run than my Shadow 750

conclusion : a Student earning less then $1.2k a month can forget about class 2 bike. Or u be a slave to your bike...

Class 2B and 2A is enough ;D

I don't get this conclusion. My bikes have been fully paid up for, but I got my R6 during my uni days and didn't have any problems with finances even though I had to feed my bike, a gf and myself. Here's a breakdown of what I remember from those days.

Monthly Income: $850-$1100 depending on days assigned.

Monthly Installments: $307

Road Tax + Insurance: $750 (62.50/mth)

Parking: $17

Petrol: RM110 (Avg of $60? based on various exchange rates)

Maintenance: 160x4 per annum (53.33/mth)

Hardly ever entered ERP gantries, so shall discount this.

Total Expenses/mth: $499.83..that's about $500.

Given this calculation I still had anything between $350-$600 for everything else. Other than the expenses on gf at that time (NOT low maintenance) and my own makan etc, I could still afford to slowly save up and mod my bike, swap the tires yearly, buy ciggs, pay my school fees using the savings per month from whatever I had left. A typical work week for my part time job involved 3 nights tending the bar from 8pm - 4am, which wasn't a problem since I could pick class slots that start in the afternoon. From time to time I got bookings to mix at private parties or other bars and restaurants. I don't see this as even close to being a slave to my bike. Far from affecting my studies, I graduated with an Honours.

I'm not trying to toot my own horn, merely trying to point out that the alleged stereotype that Class 2 bikes are beyond the means of the student population may not necessarily be true. I wasn't the only one who owned a class 2 bike, I have more than 20-30 friends who rode Class 2 bikes back then too. Very few appeared to have to slave for their bike, or have their studies affected.

that's because you haven't factor in contingency like bike breakdowns etc..

an average outing with gf will easily wipe out >50 bucks.

and don't appear to be a slave doesn't mean that he/she isn't 1. looks can be deceiving yo.

going at the rate of your installments, doesn't seem to coincide with a new R6.

I'm not superman; even if I was, superman can't print money xD so it wouldn't have helped. If can run and fly that fast also no need to ride bike liao

In my humble opinion it's something anyone can do with a little planning and foresight; plenty of people around me did the same or better.

Money for contingencies such as bike breakdowns etc were factored in; if shite happened, I simply took out from what I had saved up from excess in the past, and thus savings for things such as mods are affected. I suppose I had the blessing to get a good bike which didn't give me a lot of problems, which is why this rarely happened.

Outing with gf also falls into this category...sometimes outings = kopitiam makan which is $50.

My definition of being a slave to your bike is if you feel like you're a slave to your bike (ie you need to make personal sacrifices just to pay for bike expenses). I didn't. If anyone else thought I was a slave to my bike while I was paying for it, can't do anything also ar..

It wasn't a brand new R6. It was a 1 1/2 year old 03 R6 I purchased in 2005. Cost me around $13.5k. Things were even easier for some of my friends who had gotten 954s, older R1s and GSX-Rs ...and had no gf. The cheapest Class 2 bike in this group was a Kawasaki ZZR600 that cost around $2k, the next cheapest being a Honda 919 at $3.8k. Even if you can't manage your time well between studies and a part time job, there are older bikes among the Class 2 range you can go for. Which brings me back to the start; with a variety of Class 2 bikes available for a lower price than a Super 4 S3, and comparable maintenance costs between the inline 4 models, why is the conclusion that students cannot afford Class 2 bikes without huge sacrifices?

well, that wasn't me whom said that students can't afford Class 2, but compared it to those working, you can definitely see the difference.

btw, 03 R6 is a really hardy and nice bike to ride. haven't seen it on the road for quite awhile.. kinda regret on not getting the deal 2 years back for a fully-mod bike.. :(

How much do s4 riders spent on petrol every month?

Update on current ride. Super4 Spec 3.

Petrol - $100

Installment - $0

ERP - $40 per month.

Road Tax: $55 paid half annually / $9.20 per month

Insurance: $350 TPFT paid in full annually / $29.20 per month

Office Season Parking: $50 per month

Servicing: 3 times a year at $180 each time / $45 per month

Home Parking: Free

Total cost of ownership per month - $273.40. But in real sense, i only see money flowing out for my petrol, ERP and Office season parking on a monthly basis.

petrol $30 a month, becos short distance to my workplace, no ERP journeys, office parking free, home parking $17, engine oil change every 6 months $60, oil filter $14, shaft oil $8. No coolant, mine oil / air cool. Rd tax $226 per yr, insurance $400.

But the ride & stylo milo look experience, priceless.

That's pretty cheap!
