Honestly all of us learn bike cause we all hate squeezing in trains and buses and be at the mercy of public transport. With or without parents support, one must always remain vigilant, safe and dun pua stunt try and be hero.

im currently riding a s4 gonna get my class 2 in a few months and getting a fz1n. Paid for my bikes with my own pocket money plus ns pay last time i save all my ns allowance .Up till today my parents still dont know i ride and i feel kind of guilty not letting them know. But oh wells i rather they not worry for me and i know my parents would violently object. If they ever find out due to me accident , etc etc i will just say i riding friends bike as im a sub rider and its not my bike and it was a moment of stupidity(though i buy my bike my own money i got a good trusted friend to be main rider so all fines and letters of reminder goes to him/ , license get from army (doing racky those ppl ride motorbike one) then after ns converted to civilian haha anyhow pom .. Good thing till today i havent had a single accident . My helmet and stuff i lock on my bike as i stay in condo . i park it like at the other side of the condo to avoid detection and i wear a fullface. (that time ride pass my mum she also dunno). that time kena caught by my maid i say my friends bike i try for fun .. This is the rebel in me i cant change it but i do my best in the sense i ride safely and dont speed unneccesarily . Also riding a naked bike helps as ure exposed to the wind and it gets really uncomfortable if u decide to speed. . hope this helps if u plan to take my route but its still better to get their blessing. I will tell them on the day i get married to gain their blessing hahahah

One of my friend went touring on a bike, he died ... till today the mother will blame herself for not able to go to the temple to ask for blessing.

I thought bike was dangerous at first, until the day my friend pillion-ed me, I fell in love with the feel of riding on a bike. Then I persuaded my parents to let me learn, but at first discourage, until like the 3rd or 4th try, they brought me to BBDC to register.

When I passed, I wanted a bike, I found one and could afford one, but my father was supportive and saw that I really wanted one so he paid for me. ^^

My mom, still discourages me from riding I guess, every now and then if she see me carry helmet walking out of the house will tell me 'becareful ah!' or sometimes say 'take bus/train better'.'

My father on the other hand used to ride a scooter during his younger days but hasn't sat on a bike for many years. Now when I tell him that I wanna get bigger bike, he still support me in some ways, but well, see how it goes!

Would say I'm lucky to have such parents :) Always good to let them know and to get their blessings. Hiding the fact that you ride a bike from your parents is somehow bad I would say, cuz what if something happens to you, right? *touchwood* How to answer to them?

I pass license, in 5 months, encountered 2 accidents as in fly off bike type, both due to carelessness. Now parents don't like me riding..but times are hard huhuhu. Maybe should just use bike for night job, dayriding is kind of dangerous.

Most parent do not allow, mine too.I passed and bought a bike with a box to put the helmet.

i learn a lot from reading here. i didn't know that nowadays so hard to get "permission". However i am impressed by the "creative" solutions used by posters here. i am still laughing ( sincerely not patronising don't

misunderstand ). Who say Singaporeans are not creative? ( just look at "kok" :) )

sign...why is biking so misunderstood in Singapore? Sunday Time's Sumiko Tan "ban" her husband from motorbikes cause "they are dangerous"???

Go to vietnam, thailand, indonesia, malaysia etc & you see cubs everywhere. i saw old ladies on cubs in thailand. i saw young girls on scooters in Taiwan. i can still see old men on vespas & Lao Ks on the road in singapore TODAY! it is just a form of transport. What is the big deal? :(

EDIT: in my own case, i did not ask for permission. i just did what i thought was right & nobody protest. Maybe i was lucky but i will have gone ahead anyway even if "they" had protested. however i will be probably kanna "complains" from parents & "good" kids that i teaching people wrong things...:p

It's the mindset and Singaporeans being affluent believe that a car is manageably affordable. Thus the perspective that bikes are unnecessary hazards. With that said also keep in mind that parents have their kids' interest in mind.

Bikes have almost immediate exposure to the external environment thus the high kill rate and also the thrill and enjoyment in riding!

I didn't ask for consent. I just informed them that I was going to get my license, and later a bike. As an adult, I don't need to seek consent from them for my choice of transport--neither do they expect me to.

They made it clear it was a decision they didn't support, but still respected nonetheless.

Bike are inherently more dangerous than cars for a fact you're on two wheels and exposed to the elements. These two things you can't run away from. Want very safe, drive bus or those 5-10 ton trucks la, accident you safe and kill the other party huhuhuh. Even better if let us drive tanks, see car jam brake, you shoot the damn car for being a road hazard. Safe mah :), jking only la.

Oh, and the excuse I gave for carrying a helmet around was that I had a friend who goes to school together who is coming to pick me.

Hahaha tbh I think riding your own bike is much safer than being a pillion lor.

Thats what my Dad said, and so instead of me always being a pillion, I've got the encouragement and I'm now a rider ^^

sorry to hear that bro, my mother always says she (and my sis) wont be able to forgive themselves if i ever met into an accident....

agreed, i totally sympathize with my family's objection to riding because it is dangerous.... while they may understand owning a motorbike is a cheaper and more fuel efficient transport, i think they will never appreciate the joy riding brings to us...

my story has kept me frustrated for the past 1 month or so... recently changed job and i will need to meet clients at their offices in pretty ulu places in jurong and changi... currently have my 2A and wanted to change to a bigger bike like S4 (shiok to ride, more stable than 2A sports bike), so i told my mom i wanted to change bike.... initially she said yes, then a few days later she said no, end up i have to aeroplane the seller... got into a big argument with her last week abt me riding again, said she never should have let me ride (which is strange cos she allowed me to take 2B and ride a SP for a year).... argued with her and she threatened to kick me out of the house....

im not sure abt riders who own a car, but if given the choice to drive or ride, i would choose a motorcycle any day... rain, sun, reckless drivers, danger, inconvenience: to me its a small price to pay for the enjoyment riding give me.... i agree a car can be infinitely more convenient (fetch girlfriend, move big items, comfort, relative safety), but it will never be as shiok to commute using a car....

Cheap + fast = no good

Cheap + good = not fast

Good + fast = not cheap

I rode from 2b to 2a, parking my bike a few blocks away, helmet locked in box. Until i got class 2, rode a virago 1100cc, then told them i been riding for 4 years already. Didnt want to put box on the virago lah. Ending, they too stunned to respond, 4 years of riding! But i assured them i take bus when it rains, sometimes i leave bike in office and took bus home. So i got their blessing for that.

Just to update, I took 2B without them knowing, passed without them knowing, bought a bike without them knowing, rode without them knowing for 3 months before they found out. After they did, gave me a dressing down on "disappointments" and "safety issues", and they consistently nagged at me to sell my bike. Fast forward about a month, they kinda dropped the matter already and now just nag at me to ride slowly and safely. :) Ironically, I don't really ride that often now though.
