The unassembled RC211V as pictured is selling at $39.90 at miniature hobby at Marina Square. I just bought it a few days ago. Build quality is Tamiya standard - solid.

I've been building tanks since young but thought of building motorbikes for a change.

Just some thoughts about airbrushing vs. spray painting vs hand painting since it's brought up by some of the forum peeps...

Generally, airbrushing enables one to produce many effects, i.e. feathering one colour into the next (like camouflage on tanks, etc.). You get to save paint due to the 'thin-ness' of the paint layer applied on to the model. another benefit of a thin layer is that you don't obscure any surface detail on the model (such as tiny rivets, etc.) It's a good idea to buy a compressor (tank-mounted preferably) if you're into the hobby for long-term. Make sure it has a water-trap too. Singapore weather very humid so you won't want any moisture to get introduced into your airbrush and get spat out along with your paint. I got a Sil-Air compressor (back in JC). It runs very quietly (can airbrush till the wee hours) and has given me good service throughout the years. costs around $700. you can get it from Bras Basah. I got mine from Katong Shopping Centre. I haven't tried airbrushing using air from canisters. From what I understand air pressure may be a problem. The canisters are portable though. My Sil-Air weighs at least 15kg.

How to clean airbrush - I usually use commercial thinner and spray until clear. it's cheap but it STINKS! if using a bottle-fed airbrush, put your finger on the nozzle after the spray becomes clear. this forces the thinner to go back into the bottle (you'll see your bottle of thinner bubbling) and you'll help to clean the internal mechanism.

Internal - External airbrush. er... never heard of it. to my knowledge airbrush design is mainly differentiated by (1) feed mechanism and (2) single/double action.

Feed mechanism is simply gravity fed or bottle fed. self-explanatory.

single/double action - single action means depress trigger, air gets mixed with paint in a certain ratio (50:50???) and gets spat out. double action means you get to control the air/paint ratio. You not only get to depress the trigger, you also get to move it back and forth. Depressing controls amount of air, pulling trigger back and forth controls amount of paint.

Painting from spray cans gives you pretty good effects too. No fuss, no muss. For good effects, warm the can up (put it in a small tub of warm watter) in addition to shaking vigorously. Should give u a finer spray. After you're done remember to invert the can and spray until clear. This would clear the remaining paint in the feed/spray mechanism. Don't see this as 'wastage'. You'll rather waste this small amount than clog up the entire bottle.

Hand painting - good for detailing. try not to paint direct from the bottle as the paint is usually quite thick. use some scrap paper as your palette. if in doubt, err on the 'thin' side. thick paint is very hard to work with. again, clean out your brushes. if the paint dries at the roots, bye bye brush. you don't need a very small brush to insert detail - the shape of the tip of the brush is more important. 00 should be the smallest that you'll need. 000 is too small.

wah.... type so much liao. pai seh... hobby mah..

wow ! we found a god of modeling! hey tuapuisai!! don leave this thread and keep us updated about stuff or knowledge u have to share with fellow modellers!

thanks for ur help!!

HAHHAHA... i'm no god lah. Furthermore, I've been doing tanks all my life and the RC211V will be my first attempt at motorbike modeling.

As for how to apply decals - this is what i usually do: -

Cut the decal out - trim the decal as close to the 'pattern' as possible to eliminate excess film.

Soak the decal in water - not too long, you would want the decal to stay on the backing paper. it's much easier to apply the decal when it's on the backing paper, plus the decal retains its adhesiveness. Having an opposed tweezer (one that opens when pressure is applied) helps you hold the decal in the water. trust me, much better than using your fingers. Take the soaking wet decal (w/backing paper) and rest it on tissue to help drain excess water away.

Apply the decal ONLY to painted surfaces - if you don't paint your model, it is extremely difficult for the decal to 'stick'. Decals adhere best to smooth, flat surfaces. Motorbike models are usually painted in gloss colours so the surface should be smooth. If using flat paint, airbrush a thin gloss coat over the area that you're apply the decal too.

Hold the decal (w/ backing paper) over the area and using a wet cotton bud (or toothpick, see how big the decal is), press the decal onto the model and slide the backing paper out. Adjust the decal into the desired position (do it real quick, once it starts to 'dry' you'll tear the decal. tamiya decals are quite strong - some manufacturers decals are really flimsy.) If you have, use a decal solution and dab it onto the area before applying. helps break the surface tension.

If decal is big, make a few tiny incisions with a sharp modeling knife. the incisions cannot be seen, and it helps air to escape to prevent bubbles from forming under the decal.

After you've finished applying the decals, using modeling wax and 'buff' the surface. It'll appear as if the decal has been 'painted' on instead of 'stuck on'. use the wax only if the subject matter is supposed to be shiny.

Hope this helps.

WOw.....really great insightful tips .....i wanna ask, can i paste the decals over the model den after that spray a layer of clear coat over it instead?

and one more thing, is the clear coat a paint or a lacquer? so wad issit actually called? What am i suppose to use to give my fairings of the bike a glossy finish like theose on display at modelling shops?

hi arcfire,

If you're talking about sealing the decals after you've finished applying them, then a gloss coat would be okie (but not a flat coat. it'll make your decals 'stand out'.)

However, if you're talking about prepping the surface for decal application, then u have to spray the gloss coat on to the model before you apply the decals.

Clear coat is a lacquer. It's extremely thick when its in the bottle and should be diluted with 'lacquer thinner'. I don't think the lacquer can be diluted by any other means (turpentine, paint thinner, etc.) so for this reason I tend not to apply it with my airbrush as it's troublesome to flush the lacquer out after I'm done. Usually I use Gunze Sangyo lacquer sprays. They're pretty good.

So that means if i wan to seal the decals den i would have to spray 2 coats.....one before i paste the decals and one after? So i presume u mean to use the bottled type of lacquer spray? can they be found in the modelling shops?

the WEST decals are aftermarket decals.. you have to buy them seperately..

you can spray clear coat on the bike to have a glossy look..

sand th tyres with rough sandpaper..

the shop is Rtun'in Motosports Hobby Shop..
