I think cars are allowed to run HID lights only if they are fitted at the factory as OEM parts. Retrofitting a non-HID car with aftermarket HID items is not legal.

Past: KDX200, LC4 400, LC4 620, GSXR750WR

Present: CBR900RRY, Gas Gas EC250, XR250L, XR250RV, XR400 (motard-ed), NX650 Dominator

In order for a HID to be legal, you need to have a HID headlight. These headlight comes with an auto leveling device (motorsied) so that even when the car are loaded at the rear, the headlight will auto adjust downwards to prevent the light beam from shining upward. The reflector uses in the HID headlight also prevent unneccassary glaring. Usually these HID headlight comes STOCK with cars. You can convert your non-HID headlights to HID provided you can get the neccessary HID headlight for your car. For example you are driving a Honda Civic with halogen headlight and you know there is a HID equiped Civic model available. You can go enquire from Kah Motor what is the neccessary parts needed to convert your Civic into HID compatible headlight. Then just go LTA for approval like how you approve aftermarket exhaust.

Such headlight is still not available for bike. That why HID will never be legal for bike. Cause it cannot fufill the 2 conditions stated earlier. The closest is the adaptive headlight from BMW Motorcycle. It will auto adjust left right during cornering but don't know about up down. But doubt the reflector is built to handle HID galre issue.

There are also different type projector. If you put HID into a projector meant for Halogen which found on bike, the result maybe undesirable. Most of the time too glaring.

To Ts,

To answer your question better, the main reason is the glaring issue. Yes, other drivers may see you as your light is bright enough to capture their attention but at the same time, you are potentially blinding the driver at the on coming traffic. This way, you may indirectly cause an accident which you may not be aware of.

You can take chances by installing the HID on your bike. Some of them fixed it on the high beam so that they only on it when needed. Otherwise you will use the Halogen lo beam most of the time and stay street legal. For me, I fixed it on my lo beam. Somehow my bike's headlight have minimal glaring issue so I'm comfortable using HID as my normal driving light all the time. I noticed '08 CBR 1000 is also okay.

Could suck even more with HID. Esp 6K and above. Poorer contrast and the color didn't help me see better.

Gives out more lumens, more noticeable, looks cool yes. But definitely doesn't help my night riding.

Only noticed it when I switched bike and back to halogens.

As earlier mentioned for cars its only legal if they have auto leveling function.

How ever from some experience i would share tht anything more than 4300k (the normal stock yellow colour) only looks cool. But not much of use. When it rain even 5000k won't reflect much of a wet surface.

Yamaha LC 125 03/02 - 04/03

Yamaha RXZ 03/03 - 04/05

Suzuki Bandit VV 04/05 - 02/06

Yamaha Fazer 1000 03/06 - 10/07

Honda Blackbird 10/07 - 08/08

Yamaha Fazer 600 10/08 - 02/10

Honda Blackbird 02/10 - 03/12

You want to know the technical answer?

Because bikes LEAN. When it is tilted, even a projector lens will shoot the beam beyond horizontal level and cause glare to oncoming vehicles. Cars do not lean, therefore when used with a projector and HID, the light is kept below the horizontal line and does not cause glare to other users. Except when approaching a crest on the road, which some high end cars have auto leveling projectors.

not exactly when some of the laws are crap and simply there is cover liability on government's part.

like e-approved exhaust which is street legal under EU terms, but illegal under laws of LTA cause not certified. :sian:

SNELL or DOT approved arai/shoei helmets but w/o PSB stickers are 'illegal', but cheapo LAB helmets w/ PSB stickers are legal and safe..

Must realise something, textbook explanation and reality are two different things. Cars with HID are glaring on my side mirrors, very hard to judge distance, check blind spot, HID blinds me but they are legal. Logic?
